UAE Council Advances Environmental Goals In Second 2024 Meeting
Dr. Amna bint Abdullah Al Dahak Al Shamsi, Minister of Climate Change and the Environment, led the second meeting of the UAE Council for Environmental and Municipal Work in 2024. The meeting reviewed recent developments in municipal work at both national and GCC levels. It also explored ways to enhance the UAE's standing on the environmental performance index.
The gathering is part of ongoing efforts by the Ministry to coordinate and monitor municipal activities across the country. Discussions included topics related to implementing environmental projects and initiatives aimed at achieving sustainable economic and societal growth.

During the meeting, Al Dahak commended the collaborative spirit among the Ministry, municipalities, and partners. She highlighted that these efforts align with the UAE government's directives for environmental and societal sustainability. "The UAE's sustained efforts, led by the Council, have cultivated a distinct approach to environmental and municipal work that we share with all other countries, particularly our Gulf neighbours," she said.
Al Dahak added that leveraging expertise and strong collaboration is crucial for achieving goals in various vital areas. She emphasised that this would elevate the UAE’s position on the Environmental Performance Index both regionally and globally. "We are confident in creating thriving and sustainable communities in the UAE through sustainable practices, advanced technology, and innovative thinking," she noted.
The meeting reviewed nine globally significant key biodiversity areas (KBA) in the UAE, approved by the ‘Key Biodiversity Areas Secretariat’. This project is a collaboration between the Ministry and the International Union for Conservation of Nature, involving other government and private sector authorities. The aim is to further develop these sites to strengthen the UAE's global position in promoting biodiversity.
The discussions also covered updates on projects under the UAE Integrated Waste Management Agenda 2023-2026. The focus was on ensuring alignment with afforestation efforts as outlined in the ‘Unified Municipal Guides 2024’ and integrating them with the UAE Green Business Toolkit.
Environmental Performance Index
The meeting analysed results from the UAE's Environmental Performance Index (EPI). This index assesses environmental sustainability across 180 countries every two years. In 2022 and 2024, the UAE ranked first in its region, including Arab nations and GCC countries. It also topped five global environmental performance indicators.
The importance of specific actions to achieve objectives in key areas was stressed during discussions. These areas include air quality, agriculture, water resources, marine life protection, fishing regulations, wastewater treatment, reuse of wastewater, and net carbon fluxes.
Upcoming Events
The meeting also discussed preparations for participating in upcoming events such as the Gulf Municipal Works Conference scheduled for October 2024 in Saudi Arabia. Additionally, there was a decision to participate in the sixth edition of the Cooperation Council Award for Municipal Work during 2025-2026 under the theme "Best Practices in Sustainable Afforestation of Cities".
The second meeting saw attendance from several UAE officials who contributed to discussions on enhancing cooperation among stakeholders to meet environmental goals effectively.
Overall, these efforts are essential for strengthening regional leadership in environmental performance indices while improving global rankings. Achieving climate and environmental sustainability goals across all sectors remains a priority for all involved parties.
