Transforming Work Culture: How Wellbeing Programmes Enhance Productivity, Engagement and Employee Satisfaction
A significant number of UAE companies, as revealed by a recent Bupa Global survey, are set to boost their spending on employee wellbeing programmes within the next year, with 88% indicating plans for increased investment.
This surge in commitment stems from the recognized Return on Wellbeing Investment (ROWI), highlighting how crucial these programmes are in enhancing employee engagement, productivity, and retention, thus playing a pivotal role in the success of an organization. Remarkably, 94% of senior leaders acknowledge the positive impact of wellbeing initiatives on productivity, spotlighting the direct correlation between health investments and improved business outcomes.

Dean Pollard, Bupa Global Middle East and Asia's General Manager, shared insights on the strategic importance of prioritizing employee health, stating, "Our specially commissioned Return on Wellbeing Investment (ROWI) survey is a clear indicator that prioritising employee health is not only beneficial for individuals but also a strategic move for businesses.
"When companies invest in holistic wellbeing initiatives, they experience tangible health returns — both in terms of reduced employee absenteeism and improved engagement and performance. Wellbeing programmes are no longer a luxury but a necessary investment to foster a healthier, more resilient workforce, ultimately driving business success."
The data from the survey underscores the substantial benefits that wellbeing programmes offer businesses. Notably, over half of the senior leaders (53%) who participated in the survey witnessed a notable uptick in productivity following the adoption of wellbeing initiatives. Furthermore, 49% of employers reported enhanced employee engagement, while a reduction in absenteeism was observed by 36% of respondents.
These findings not only highlight the direct impact of wellbeing programmes on personal health but also their significant influence on boosting business performance. In a reflection of their value, nearly a third (29%) of organizations reported reduced employee turnover rates, emphasizing wellbeing as a key component for both retaining talent and achieving sustained success.
Despite the clear advantages, the execution of wellbeing programmes faces hurdles, including low participation rates among employees, noted by 45% of senior decision-makers, and budget constraints, identified by 43%.
However, the future looks promising with a strong resolve among nearly nine in ten employers (88%) to ramp up their investment in these initiatives in the coming year. This includes more than one in five (22%) organizations planning to increase their wellbeing budgets by over 15%, signaling a robust commitment to nurturing a healthier and more engaged workforce.
From the viewpoint of employees, wellbeing initiatives have made a significant impact, with two-thirds (66%) expressing satisfaction with their company's efforts, especially appreciating flexible work policies, health workshops, and extended maternity and parental leave. Such initiatives have not only met the employees' needs but also fostered a supportive and health-conscious work environment.
A majority (60%) of employees have seen improvements in their work-life balance, with nearly half (47%) experiencing better overall health. The initiatives are credited with reducing health risks and supporting a balanced work environment, with 41% of employees feeling more motivated and 36% reporting lower stress levels.
Employees now consider wellbeing programmes not merely as perks but as essential elements for job satisfaction and health. This shift has led to heightened expectations from employers, with 89% of employees prioritizing expanded insurance benefits. This desire extends to more comprehensive access to wellbeing tools, including frequent health screenings (88%) and enhanced mental health resources (85%), underlining the importance of holistic health approaches. Additionally, the demand for flexible working arrangements, sought after by 85% of employees, reflects a broader desire for balance and autonomy in managing professional and personal lives.
As wellbeing becomes integral to workplace culture, 93% of employees are prioritizing such initiatives in their job search, indicating a significant shift in how potential employers are evaluated. This trend underscores the necessity for companies to invest in comprehensive wellbeing programmes to attract and retain top talent.
