UAE's Banking Sector Records Robust Growth With An 8.1% Increase In Net International Reserves In First Half Of 2024

The UAE's banking sector saw an 8.1% rise in net international reserves, amounting to AED92.3 billion in the first half of 2024. By June's end, reserves reached AED1.238 trillion, up from AED1.145 trillion a year earlier.

According to the Central Bank of the UAE’s June bulletin, the Central Bank held AED769.7 billion of these reserves by June's end, reflecting a 14.3% increase from AED673.42 billion at the previous year's end. Banks operating within the country had net international reserves of AED468.13 billion by June.

The Central Bank’s gold reserves saw significant growth, increasing by 22.1% year-on-year to reach AED20.467 billion by June, compared to AED16.768 billion in June 2023, marking a rise of AED3.7 billion.

In the first half of this year alone, gold reserves grew by 12.8%, reaching AED18.147 billion at last year's end. The bank's diversified assets include gold, liquid funds, certificates of deposit, and securities held to maturity.

The number of employees in the UAE’s banking sector rose to 37,811 by June's end from 36,737 in June 2023, adding 1,074 new employees over a year.

National banks employed 31,628 people by June's end, up by 2,051 employees from June 2023’s figure of 29,577. Foreign banks operating in the UAE employed 6,183 people during the same period.

Banking Operations and Transactions

The value of transactions processed through the UAE Funds Transfer System (UAEFTS) exceeded AED9.32 trillion in the first half of this year, showing a year-on-year increase of 16%, compared to transfers amounting to AED8.01 trillion during the same period in 2023.

Transfers were distributed as follows: AED5.829 trillion in interbank transfers and AED3.49 trillion in customer transfers.

Cheque Clearances and Cash Handling

The value of cleared cheques using their images amounted to AED646.6 billion across 11.03 million cheques during the first half of this year.

Cheque clearances were distributed as follows: AED109.4 billion for approximately 1.965 million cheques in January; AED106.7 billion for 1.837 million cheques in February; AED112.6 billion for 1.855 million cheques in March; AED92.9 billion for 1.66 million cheques in April; AED122.7 billion for 2.01 million cheques in May; and AED102.17 billion for 1.689 million cheques in June.

Cash Deposits and Withdrawals

The value of cash deposits at the Central Bank amounted to AED93.6 billion during the first half of this year while cash withdrawals reached AED103.2 billion during the same period.

This included withdrawals amounting to AED103.19 billion in paper currency and AED33.2 million in coins.

Bank Branches and E-Banking Units

The number of licensed commercial banks reached 61 during H1 2024, comprising 23 national banks and 38 foreign banks.

The total number of bank branches stood at 554 with national banks accounting for 482 branches and foreign banks for 72 branches.

E-banking service units affiliated with national banks reached a total of 46 units by mid-2024 while exchange offices numbered at 21 units each for both national and foreign banks.

The Central Bank’s statistics also revealed that its gold reserves have grown significantly over recent years: rising to AED12.862 billion at the end of 2020 from just AED4.044 billion at the end of 2019 and only AED1.134 billion at the close of 2018.

The number of employees has also seen notable growth over recent years: from a total workforce count standing at just over thirty-three thousand back at year-end twenty-twenty up through thirty-five thousand eight hundred thirty workers counted as employed within this sector come December twenty-twenty-two.
