UAE Hosts Inaugural Antarctic Research Programme Workshop To Address Climate Change Challenges

The National Centre of Meteorology recently organised the first UAE Antarctic Research Programme Workshop in Abu Dhabi. This event brought together global experts to discuss Antarctica's critical role in understanding climate change and its extensive impacts. The workshop aimed to foster collaboration between UAE researchers and international counterparts, enhancing the UAE's contribution to scientific research in this field.

Dr. Abdullah Al Mandous, Director General of the Centre, highlighted the urgent need for polar research. He stressed that climate change poses significant challenges, such as rising sea levels and altered weather patterns, affecting coastal communities worldwide. He noted that the Gulf region, including the UAE, faces threats related to water and food security due to these changes.

UAE Launches Antarctic Research Programme Workshop

Dr. Al Mandous emphasised the importance of understanding how polar ice melt affects mid-latitude weather patterns. These connections are crucial for shaping global climatic conditions. He called for enhanced cooperation among countries, academic institutions, and research entities to exchange knowledge and expertise in addressing environmental challenges.

The workshop focused on several key topics, including international policies related to polar research and major activities conducted by large organisations in Antarctica. It also aimed to identify priorities for the UAE Antarctic Research Program through panel discussions and interactive workshops encouraging active participation from attendees.

This ambitious research programme reflects the UAE's dedication to investing in science and research. It aims to position the country as a leader in providing innovative solutions to climate challenges. By hosting this workshop, the UAE reaffirms its commitment to scientific excellence, environmental stewardship, and international cooperation.

The workshop seeks to develop a strategic focus for the programme while increasing institutional awareness of polar research's importance. It aims to build capacity and expertise among Emirati researchers in polar studies, contributing significantly to global scientific efforts.

Addressing Climate Challenges

The polar regions are experiencing unprecedented changes due to climate change. Understanding their impact on mid-latitude weather patterns is vital for effective mitigation strategies. The UAE remains committed to investing in polar research and enhancing international collaboration as part of its vision for environmental sustainability.

Hosting this workshop underscores the UAE's commitment to developing policies supporting innovation and tackling climate change challenges. It highlights the importance of international cooperation in achieving sustainable development goals while enhancing research capabilities.

The event is expected to result in a strategic research focus for the programme, fostering increased institutional awareness about polar research's significance. This initiative aligns with the UAE's ambition to be a global contributor in addressing climate challenges through scientific excellence.
