UAE Leads In Establishing Global Standards For Advanced Aerial Mobility Regulations

The UAE is advancing its role in shaping global regulations for advanced aerial mobility. This effort is driven by the Technology Innovation Institute (TII) and ASPIRE, under the Advanced Technology Research Council (ATRC), in partnership with the General Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA). The initiative focuses on creating data-driven regulations for integrating crewed and uncrewed aerial vehicles into national airspace.

Field simulations are underway at Yas Island, Zayed Port, and Abu Dhabi International Airport. These locations serve as testbeds for future vertiport hubs. The tests use advanced modelling tools developed with the California Institute of Technology (Caltech) to study wind patterns, safety limits, and flight dynamics. This research informs future airspace designs.

UAE Sets Global Standards for Aerial Mobility

The project includes developing air corridor models and operational standards for technologies like air taxis and drone logistics. This makes the UAE one of the few countries piloting such frameworks. The initiative aims to ensure safe integration of these technologies into existing airspace systems.

Eng. Aqeel Ahmed Al Zarooni from the GCAA emphasised that as aviation evolves, so must regulatory frameworks. He stated: "As aviation continues to evolve, our regulatory frameworks must evolve with it. Through this collaboration with TII and ASPIRE, we are laying the foundation for the safe and scalable integration of next-generation aerial mobility, ensuring harmony between manned and unmanned air traffic systems in support of our vision for smart, connected cities."

The project’s four workstreams focus on designing safe air corridors, vehicle separation standards, coordination between traditional and unmanned air traffic management, and providing regulatory advisory support. These efforts aim to set global benchmarks for urban air mobility governance.

Building Trust in Urban Air Mobility

Andrew Strefford from ASPIRE highlighted that urban air mobility involves more than just technology; it requires trust and safety. He noted: "Policies and regulations are therefore essential to its adoption. What we are establishing in Abu Dhabi lays the foundation for global confidence in how future cities will communicate and operate their urban and suburban airspaces, opening up new economic opportunities across mobility and logistics sectors."

Dr Najwa Al-Araj from TII stressed that technology alone isn't enough for breakthroughs in urban air mobility. She believes forward-looking regulations addressing autonomous flight complexities are crucial.

By combining advanced research, simulation technologies, and cross-sector collaboration, the UAE is setting global benchmarks for urban air mobility governance. This reinforces Abu Dhabi's status as a testbed for next-generation transport regulation and a model for smart cities worldwide.
