Terra-Gen Commissions Monte Cristo I Windpower Project To Boost Clean Energy In Texas

Terra-Gen, a major renewable energy producer in the U.S., has announced the commissioning of the Monte Cristo I Windpower Project. This facility, located in Hidalgo County, Texas, has a capacity of 238.5 megawatts and will produce over 850 gigawatt-hours of clean electricity annually. This output is enough to power around 81,000 homes each year. The energy generated has been contracted to two corporate buyers through long-term agreements.

The project was celebrated with a ribbon-cutting ceremony attended by company representatives, local officials, and community members. John O’Connor, Terra-Gen's Chief Financial Officer, expressed pride in the achievement. "It is an honor to celebrate the hard work and dedication of the hundreds of men and women who made the commissioning of the Monte Cristo wind project possible," he stated. He highlighted Terra-Gen’s commitment to expanding renewable energy access across Texas and the U.S.

Monte Cristo I Windpower Project Launched in Texas

The construction phase of Monte Cristo I Windpower created about 280 jobs at its peak. Workers logged over 490,000 hours without any lost-time incidents during construction and transition to operations. The project also improved local infrastructure by upgrading more than 11 miles of state roads and 25 miles of county roads.

Beyond construction, the facility will provide long-term economic benefits to Hidalgo County. These include over $100 million in property taxes, landowner payments, and other contributions throughout its lifespan. Richard F. Cortez, Hidalgo County Judge, welcomed Terra-Gen’s investment as it supports local economic growth and public services.

Monte Cristo I Windpower marks Terra-Gen’s second wind project in Texas. Alongside the Texas Big Spring wind facility, their total clean energy generation in the state now reaches 273 MW. Development activities for Phase 2 of Monte Cristo Windpower are ongoing following its permitting.

This project is significant as it is the first completed since Masdar acquired a 50 percent stake in Terra-Gen in 2024. This acquisition reflects Masdar’s commitment to supporting U.S. energy transformation efforts and highlights the strategic importance of this market within their global portfolio.

The Monte Cristo I Windpower Project not only contributes to clean energy production but also strengthens grid reliability with sustainable power sources while investing in local communities.
