Elon Musk's Starlink Launches In Oman, Aims For Major GCC Expansion

In a significant move towards enhancing Oman's digital infrastructure, the Telecommunications Regulatory Authority has given the green light to Starlink Muscat, allowing it to roll out broadband internet services across the country via satellite communication systems. This initiative is set to revolutionise internet access, especially in remote and under-served regions, by leveraging low-earth orbit satellites to deliver high-speed broadband services.

Starlink's entrance into the Omani market is not just about offering internet connectivity; it's poised to transform the digital landscape comprehensively. With plans to blanket the entire nation, including universally serviced areas, the company guarantees speeds of up to 100 Mbps.

This capability is particularly crucial for Oman's key economic sectors like oil and gas, mining, tourism, and agriculture, promising to usher in a new era of productivity and innovation. Moreover, Starlink's approach includes outfitting communication towers in difficult-to-reach areas with state-of-the-art technology, thereby facilitating Oman's journey towards digital transformation.

The announcement by the state-run Oman News Agency, citing the Telecommunications Regulatory Authority (TRA), indicates that Starlink Muscat has been awarded a class 1 licence. This certification empowers the company to offer fixed public telecommunications services throughout the Sultanate, even in the most challenging terrains.

This development not only expands the internet service landscape but also introduces a competitive edge among telecom providers in Oman, ultimately benefiting the end consumers with improved service quality and speed.

The service, backed by Elon Musk's pioneering technology, aims to bridge the digital divide by ensuring every corner of Oman has access to reliable and fast internet. This initiative aligns with Oman's broader economic goals, including the creation of 45,000 new jobs this year, by bolstering sectors critical to the nation's prosperity.

As Starlink continues to broaden its service offerings, the company has also been working on securing regulatory approvals in various regions. In the UAE and Saudi Arabia, Starlink's service availability is pending such approvals. However, a notable advancement occurred in the UAE, where the Telecommunications and Digital Government Regulatory Authority (TDRA) granted Starlink a ten-year satellite internet services license.

Looking ahead to 2025, Starlink has plans to make its high-speed, low-latency internet service available in Kuwait, Bahrain, and Jordan. This expansion will further extend Starlink's reach in the Middle East, providing more individuals and businesses access to its advanced satellite internet services.
