SSAB And Parmaco Partner To Develop World's First Building With Fossil-Free Steel Tech
In a groundbreaking move towards sustainable construction, SSAB has teamed up with Parmaco to create a groundbreaking structure that aims to be the world's first concept building constructed entirely from fossil-free steel.
This collaboration is set to revolutionize the construction industry by integrating SSAB's pioneering HYBRIT® technology, which significantly reduces carbon emissions by replacing traditional coal with hydrogen and fossil-free electricity. The process's by-product is merely water, eliminating CO2 emissions entirely. This innovative approach not only underscores the potential of fossil-free steel in modern construction but also marks a significant step forward in reducing the climate impact of building materials.

Parmaco, known for its unique Fixcel steel cell technology, designs versatile spaces ranging from educational institutions to government buildings. The company's Fixcel technology stands out for its role in constructing frames for buildings, promoting superior indoor air quality and efficient energy consumption.
This partnership with SSAB will see Parmaco's Fixcel steel cells made entirely from fossil-free steel, further solidifying Parmaco's commitment to pioneering sustainable construction solutions that do not sacrifice quality or durability. "We are thrilled to partner with SSAB on this pioneering project," says Jukka Joutsenkoski, CEO of Parmaco.
"At Parmaco, we are committed to pushing the boundaries of sustainable construction. We have the technology ready and soon we will have the right material. The use of SSAB's fossil-free steel in our Fixcel technology is a natural progression in our mission to create environmentally responsible buildings that do not compromise on quality or durability."
Setting New Standards in Construction
By leveraging HYBRIT® technology, SSAB is addressing a major challenge in the steel industry by significantly reducing the fossil carbon emissions traditionally associated with steel production. "Our collaboration with Parmaco represents an exciting opportunity to showcase the potential of fossil-free steel in the construction industry," says Olavi Huhtala, EVP and Head of SSAB Europe. "With the HYBRIT® technology, we remove one of the key problems with traditional steelmaking by largely eliminating fossil carbon emissions from the production process. Together with partners like Parmaco, we can reduce the climate impact from building material and show what is possible already now."
The concept building, anticipated to commence construction in early 2025 and complete within the same year, is poised to be a beacon for future sustainable construction projects globally. Its completion will demonstrate the feasibility of addressing urban development demands in a manner that is mindful of the environment, thus negating the notion that progress must come at the expense of the planet’s well-being.
Parmaco and SSAB's joint initiative is not merely about constructing a building; it's about setting a new precedent for the construction industry at large. By utilizing fossil-free steel for every component of the building, this project showcases a tangible solution to one of the world's most pressing challenges—climate change. As such, the building will stand as a testament to what is achievable when innovation meets sustainability, offering a model for future projects seeking to minimize their environmental footprint.
