Squash Cultivation In Qassim Region Enhances Culinary Versatility And Economic Opportunities

In Saudi Arabia's Qassim Region, the cultivation of squash is on the rise due to favourable agricultural conditions and increasing local demand. This versatile ingredient is gaining popularity in global cuisine for its nutritional benefits. Although botanically a fruit, squash is often used as a vegetable in cooking because of its mild taste and culinary versatility.

Squash comes in various shapes and colours, including orange, green, yellow, and white. These gourds are known for their health benefits such as improving eyesight, boosting immunity, supporting heart health, aiding weight management, and promoting healthy skin and hair. They are nutrient-rich yet low in calories.

Qassim's Squash Cultivation Boosts Economy

Farmer Saleh bin Hamad Al-Saab shared insights with the Saudi Press Agency: "Growing squash in Qassim is not only possible but also profitable and promising. We cultivate several types, including butternut squash, traditional pumpkin varieties, and even spaghetti squash, which is gaining popularity." He noted that each type has unique uses: butternut squash suits soups and baked goods; traditional pumpkin is rich in beta-carotene; spaghetti squash offers a healthy pasta alternative.

White squash holds particular appeal for events and decorations during seasonal celebrations. Al-Saab highlighted that squash can be transformed into various products like jams, seed oils, soups, pies, and natural skin masks. Its potential as an economic crop is promising due to low water and pesticide needs and long storage capabilities without losing value.

The adoption of drip irrigation systems has enhanced crop quality and productivity significantly. Cultivating diverse varieties has also contributed to this improvement. Al-Saab praised the growing public awareness of pumpkins as a healthy food option. This awareness presents opportunities to develop food industries based on this crop, including juices, dried foods, and cosmetic products.

Ultimately, squash contributes significantly to local food security while generating substantial economic returns. It underscores the vital role of agriculture in advancing Saudi Arabia's sustainable development goals.
