The United Arab Emirates is advancing its efforts to become a leader in food security and sustainability with the Food Tech Valley initiative. This ambitious project has recently taken a significant leap forward through a partnership with Spinneys, a leading premium supermarket chain. This collaboration is set to enhance the UAE's food processing capabilities, underscoring the nation's dedication to fostering innovation within the food sector.
A groundbreaking 27-year agreement has been established between Food Tech Valley and Spinneys, paving the way for the development of a 500,000 sq. ft. advanced processing facility. This move is in harmony with Dubai's goal to pioneer in the fields of sustainable and advanced food technologies. The facility, which marks a pivotal development for the Food Tech Valley, is expected to begin operations shortly, bolstering the UAE's food security and sustainability landscape.
Rashed Mohammad, Chief Real Estate Officer of Wasl, highlighted the significance of Spinneys joining the Food Tech Valley, emphasizing the mutual goal of providing the UAE's populace with sustainably sourced, high-quality food supplies. He expressed enthusiasm about Spinneys' role in enhancing Dubai's stature as a center of food innovation, sustainability, and security.
Echoing this sentiment, Sunil Kumar, CEO of Spinneys expressed Spinneys' commitment to the well-being of its customers, local communities, and the broader UAE ecosystem. He underlined the partnership's importance in supporting local farmers and food producers, and its alignment with Spinneys' growth ambitions and dedication to offering advanced food processing solutions to consumers.
Launched by His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, the Food Tech Valley is designed to be a hub for technology-driven food and agricultural solutions, contributing significantly to the UAE's food security goals. The initiative aims to attract key players and innovators in the industry, as demonstrated by the latest partnership with Spinneys. This collaboration not only solidifies Food Tech Valley's role in pioneering food sector projects but also offers a conducive environment for industry leaders to innovate and expand their operations.
With the UAE importing over 90% of its food and anticipating a 50% increase in food demand by 2030, the Food Tech Valley is crucial for developing a more sustainable and self-reliant food ecosystem. This initiative aligns with the UAE’s vision to rank among the top countries in the Global Food Security Index by 2051.
The Food Tech Valley is set to feature a blend of production zones, warehousing, logistics and cold-storage facilities, alongside an innovation and R&D center, an academy, a business park, a marketplace, a visitor center, and residential areas, all dedicated to transforming the UAE into a global hub for food technology.
