Special Olympics UAE Hosts Awarding Ceremony For Unified Champion Schools Promoting Inclusion

The Unified Champion Schools (UCS) Awarding Ceremony was recently organised by Special Olympics UAE. This event celebrated schools that earned the Unified Schools and Unified Champion Schools titles for the 2022-2023 and 2023-2024 academic years. Held at Zayed University Conference Center in Abu Dhabi, it gathered representatives from 260 schools and three universities to acknowledge their dedication to inclusive practices.

Talal Al Hashemi, National Director of Special Olympics UAE, praised the schools and universities for their dedication. He stated, "Your inspiring efforts and commitment to inclusion are vital to empowering people of determination. The supportive learning environments you create through Unified Sports, Inclusive Leadership, and Whole School Engagement exemplify the spirit of inclusion that defines our society." His remarks highlighted the importance of fostering inclusive educational settings.

UAE Hosts Unified Champion Schools Awards

The UCS programme has grown significantly over time, now involving 1,968 schools across the UAE. As a global initiative by Special Olympics International, it promotes full participation of students with diverse abilities. The programme provides resources for creating inclusive school environments where students can lead, form friendships, and collaborate effectively.

Special Olympics UAE also launched the Unified Schools UAE Games as part of the UCS programme. These games included football and badminton competitions for about 400 male and female students. This initiative aims to encourage sports participation among students with different abilities, fostering teamwork and camaraderie.

Al Hashemi noted that the UCS programme's growth is not just quantitative but also qualitative. He mentioned the organisation of a major event called the 'UAE Games,' which focused on Unified Champions Schools' participation in its first half. This development reflects an enhanced approach to promoting inclusivity in education.

Empowering Educators

The UCS Programme offers ongoing training and support for teachers to improve their skills in conducting unified sports and activities independently within their schools. This training ensures that educators are well-equipped to facilitate inclusive practices effectively.

The ceremony underscored the commitment of educational institutions in supporting individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities. By embracing inclusive practices, these schools contribute significantly to empowering people of determination within their communities.
