Space Communications Symposium In Sharjah Addresses Regional Balance And Challenges In Space Technology

An international symposium on space communications, themed "The Regional Balance and Challenges," was organised by the University of Sharjah. It was held under the patronage of H.H. Sheikh Sultan bin Ahmed Al Qasimi, Deputy Ruler of Sharjah. The event, in collaboration with the Arab Union for Astronomy and Space Science (AUASS) and the Asia-Pacific Space Cooperation Organisation (APSCO), aimed to enhance space resource usage in the Asia-Pacific region.

The symposium featured over 25 research papers and eight training workshops led by experts in astronomy and space sciences. Topics included artificial intelligence applications in space communication, space law, Arab space cooperation, and nano-satellite communication system vulnerabilities. The event also explored expanding international cooperation to advance space communications.

Sharjah Hosts Space Communications Symposium

Prof. Hamid M.K. Al Naimiy, Chancellor of the University of Sharjah, expressed gratitude to H.H. Sheikh Sultan bin Ahmed Al Qasimi for his support. He highlighted that the symposium inspires collaboration in space sciences and technology with participation from over 15 countries. Representatives from Bahrain's National Space Science Authority, Emirates Space Agency, and UAE Telecommunications Authority attended.

The University of Sharjah is dedicated to educating future generations in astronomy and space sciences through various academic programs. These include a Master of Science in Astronomy and Space Sciences, a Master in Air and Space Law, and an upcoming PhD programme in Space Science and Technology.

Dr. Awni Al-Khasawneh, Secretary-General of AUASS, noted that the forum began with a two-day training course on "Frequency and Orbital Elements in Satellite Design." This course aimed to improve practical skills related to space communications. AUASS is committed to advancing astronomy and space sciences by organising such events for Arab professionals.

Xu Yansong, Director-General of APSCO, stated: "In our increasingly interconnected world, effective space communication systems are essential for fostering international collaboration, enhancing scientific research, and bridging the digital divide." He emphasised that the symposium provides a platform for sharing knowledge and exploring potential collaborations.

Interactive Activities at SAASST

Participants enjoyed a special show at the Sharjah Planetarium during the symposium. The show highlighted technology's role in improving space communication through satellites. Attendees also engaged in stargazing activities using telescopes to explore stars and planets as part of SAASST’s efforts to promote scientific culture.

The event concluded with honouring participants involved in scientific sessions. This gesture acknowledged their contributions to discussions on global satellite communications trends, competitive aspects impacting future telecommunications regulations, and AUASS's role in promoting education and research.
