Sorbonne University Abu Dhabi Showcases Emirati Heritage In Threads Of Heritage Exhibition

Sorbonne University Abu Dhabi (SUAD) has inaugurated a cultural exhibition titled ‘Threads of Heritage: Emirati Women’s Traditional Fashion and Jewellery’. This event, in partnership with the National Library and Archives, the Observatoire des patrimoines de l'Alliance Sorbonne Université, and Dubai Culture, is part of the UAE's 2025 Year of Community initiative. It highlights the UAE’s cultural heritage, fostering collective identity and intergenerational dialogue.

The exhibition is open to the public until 3rd May at SUAD’s Atrium. It offers an exploration of Emirati women’s attire from ancient times to modern interpretations. Visitors can experience a captivating display of garments, jewellery, poetry, and historical artefacts that narrate the rich legacy of Emirati fashion.

Threads of Heritage Exhibition at Sorbonne University

Dr Christophe Moulherat, an Associate Professor in History of Art & Archaeology at SUAD, developed this exhibition. Collaborating with archaeologists and heritage scholars, he curated it around four main components. These elements illustrate how traditional fashion and jewellery have evolved alongside the UAE's socioeconomic changes.

A chronological display features garments and jewellery from the early 20th century to today. Special emphasis is placed on the 1970s as a pivotal era. These items are paired with archaeological artefacts and contextual records to highlight their cultural importance.

The exhibition also includes rare archaeological finds of Emirati jewellery and ornaments. Visual documentation accompanies these pieces, providing insight into their craftsmanship and cultural significance. This component enhances understanding of the intricate artistry involved in creating these traditional items.

Another section showcases documentary archives such as travelogues, diplomatic records, and personal manuscripts. These documents offer glimpses into the social and cultural contexts where these garments were worn, enriching visitors' appreciation of their historical relevance.

Poetic Reflections

Poetic reflections are interwoven throughout the exhibition. Excerpts from Emirati poets and classical Arabic literature celebrate traditional clothing. These literary pieces are thoughtfully paired with artefacts and visuals to add emotional depth to the experience.

Professor Nathalie Martial-Braz, Chancellor of Sorbonne University Abu Dhabi, stated: "At Sorbonne University Abu Dhabi, we believe cultural heritage is a living thread that connects the past to the present. Through Threads of Heritage, we are proud to provide a space where the public can engage with the stories, styles, and traditions that have shaped Emirati identity."

This exhibition reflects SUAD's commitment to celebrating diversity while preserving culture. It aims to spark meaningful dialogue by connecting people through shared stories and traditions within the spirit of UAE’s 2025 Year of Community initiative.
