Empowering Refugee Women: Sheikha Fatima Fund's Role In Advancing SDGs
Dr. Maitha Al Shamsi, Minister of State and Chairperson of the Supreme Committee of the Sheikha Fatima Fund for Refugee Women, has highlighted the significance of global partnerships in advancing the efforts of local and international organisations. These collaborations aim to expedite the achievement of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) globally.
Dr. Al Shamsi emphasised H.H. Sheikha Fatima bint Mubarak's dedication to supporting refugee issues, particularly those affecting women. As Chairwoman of the General Women's Union (GWU), President of the Supreme Council for Motherhood and Childhood, and Supreme Chairwoman of the Family Development Foundation (FDF), Sheikha Fatima is committed to empowering women to become active partners in developmental efforts.

Since establishing the Fund, Sheikha Fatima has initiated numerous projects aimed at enhancing refugees' skills across various developmental fields. These initiatives ensure a dignified life for refugees by developing their capabilities.
The statement from Dr. Al Shamsi was made in relation to the participation of an Emirates Red Crescent (ERC) team within the UAE delegation at the High-level Political Forum on Sustainable Development in New York. The forum, under the Economic and Social Council's auspices, concluded with a focus on "Reinforcing the 2030 Agenda and eradicating poverty in times of multiple crises."
The ERC engaged in several events during the forum, including a session with Amina J. Mohammed, Deputy Secretary-General of the United Nations, and representatives from various countries and organisations. Additionally, they participated in a lecture at New York University attended by graduate students from diverse programmes.
UAE's Role in Global Humanitarian Efforts
Abdullah Nasser Lootah, Deputy Minister of Cabinet Affairs for Competitiveness and Knowledge Exchange, stated, "The UAE plays a pivotal role in supporting global humanitarian issues, making it a model and a bright spot in developmental work." He added that initiatives by the Sheikha Fatima Fund have reinforced Emirati values globally, such as peace, development, and empowerment for all social segments.
The Fund for Refugee Women was launched in 2000 through collaboration with Emirates Red Crescent and the UN High Commission for Refugees. It aims to provide protection and assistance to refugee women and children worldwide.
Recent Agreements and Projects
The ERC announced that two agreements were signed with the UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR) at its Geneva headquarters. The first agreement renews their partnership for three years to support refugee women. The second agreement launches a US$1 million project to provide sustainable shelter for refugees and internally displaced persons (IDPs) in Burkina Faso and Chad, benefiting around 871 families.
A successful project was also implemented by ERC in Uganda in cooperation with UNHCR. This initiative benefited over 45,000 people, with 60 percent being women working in agriculture and livestock sectors.
The UAE's commitment to humanitarian efforts continues to set an example globally through initiatives like those led by Sheikha Fatima Fund for Refugee Women. These projects not only provide immediate relief but also empower women to contribute significantly to their communities' future.
