Sheikh Shakhbout Medical City Celebrates Rare Quintuplet Delivery In Major Healthcare Milestone

Sheikh Shakhbout Medical City (SSMC), part of the PureHealth group, has successfully delivered quintuplets. Such pregnancies are rare, occurring spontaneously in about 1 in 45 to 60 million cases. This achievement is significant due to the high risks involved for both mother and babies. The delivery marks a milestone in neonatal care within the UAE.

The quintuplets were born at just 25 weeks, classifying them as extremely premature. Each baby weighed between 588 and 801 grams, necessitating immediate intensive care. Despite these challenges, all five newborns were discharged in good health, highlighting SSMC's advanced medical capabilities.

Dr. Muhieddine Seoud, Chair of Obstetrics and Gynaecology at SSMC, emphasised the importance of specialised centres for high-risk pregnancies. "High order pregnancies carry significant maternal risks and should only be cared for in a specialised tertiary obstetrical centre where all ancillary services are available," he stated. SSMC's expertise ensures optimal outcomes for such complex cases.

An emergency Caesarean section was performed by a team of 45 medical professionals, including nine neonatologists and four obstetricians. The procedure was successful due to SSMC's multidisciplinary approach and organisational skills.

Following their birth, the quintuplets received extensive care in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU). The mother was discharged after one week, while the babies joined her later after receiving necessary medical attention. The family continues to receive follow-up care at SSMC’s outpatient clinic.
