Sharjah Ruler H.H. Sheikh Dr. Sultan Al Qasimi Opens 43rd International Book Fair Celebrating Arabic Culture

H.H. Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Sharjah, inaugurated the 43rd Sharjah International Book Fair at Expo Centre Sharjah. The event, organised by the Sharjah Book Authority (SBA), runs until November 17 with Morocco as the guest of honour. The theme for this year is ‘It Starts with a Book’.

The opening ceremony was attended by H.H. Sheikh Sultan Bin Ahmed bin Sultan Al Qasimi, Deputy Ruler; Sheikha Bodour bint Sultan Al Qasimi, Chairperson of SBA; and other dignitaries. In his speech, the Ruler of Sharjah emphasised efforts to promote Arabic language and literature through initiatives like the Historical Corpus of the Arabic Language.

H.H. Sheikh Dr. Sultan expressed pride in celebrating books and cultural heritage at the fair. He highlighted the completion of the Historical Corpus of the Arabic Language as a significant achievement involving over 700 contributors. This project underscores Sharjah’s dedication to preserving linguistic heritage.

The corpus aims to safeguard Arabic's rich linguistic and cultural legacy, paving the way for future projects that honour this enduring language. "The corpus has been a personal dream," said H.H., noting its role in preserving history, literature, and identity over seven years.

During his address, H.H. announced a new scholarly initiative: the Comprehensive Arabic Encyclopedia. This project will cover sciences, literature, arts, and notable figures from the Arab world’s past and present, bridging historical achievements with contemporary knowledge.

The Ruler of Sharjah also honoured Algerian author Ahlam Mosteghanemi as 'Cultural Personality of the Year' for her contributions to literature. He praised heads of Arabic language academies who helped complete the Historical Corpus alongside Al Qasimi Publications.

Sharjah's Cultural Vision

Ahmed bin Rakkad Al Ameri, CEO of SBA, highlighted Sharjah’s commitment to knowledge as envisioned by H.H., placing books at its cultural core. He noted that each book fair gathering reaffirms this vision where books are central to aspirations.

Al Ameri shared that over 2,000 publishers from 108 countries signed more than 3,000 contracts during a recent conference. For 12 days, intellectuals worldwide will enrich visitors with diverse insights into global literature trends.

Morocco's Participation

Latifa Moftaqir from Morocco’s Ministry of Youth, Culture and Communication expressed gratitude for being honoured at such a prestigious platform. She acknowledged Sharjah’s dedication to arts under Sheikha Bodour Al Qasimi’s leadership.

Moftaqir mentioned that Morocco will present a rich programme featuring over 40 literary figures leading events like theatrical shows and artistic activities while exploring Moroccan culture through various mediums.

Acknowledging Literary Contributions

Ahlam Mosteghanemi expressed appreciation for being honoured at SIBF’s 43rd edition. She praised Sharjah’s role in promoting knowledge under H.H.’s leadership which opens doors for creativity in literature.

She fondly recalled her first visit two decades ago when she felt warmly welcomed by Sharjah’s community spirit towards books—a passion shared by both herself and H.H., who built his personal library before becoming ruler.

SIBF Highlights

A short film showcased SIBF's theme ‘It Starts with a Book’, depicting journeys fuelled by books’ power to inspire discovery and progress globally through storytelling imagery captivating audiences worldwide.

Another film unveiled efforts behind completing MojamGPT—the world-first repository encapsulating 17 centuries’ development within 127 volumes powered digitally via AI technology accessible globally today thanks largely due diligence shown throughout seven-year project duration led personally committed team members involved directly therein ensuring success achieved ultimately realised fully now
