Sharjah To Welcome New Sports City With Four Complexes As Ruler Approves Plans
H.H. Dr. Sheikh Sultan bin Muhammad Al Qasimi, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Sharjah, has given the green light for the designs and location of the new Sports City in Sharjah. The city will be constructed at a site chosen by the Sharjah Ruler and will include four sports complexes for both team and individual sports.
This announcement was made by Ali bin Shaheen Al Suwaidi, member of the Executive Council and Head of The Sharjah Department of Public Works (SDPW), during a phone interview on the "Direct Line" programme, broadcast on Sharjah Radio and Television. Al Suwaidi explained that the Ruler of Sharjah personally sketched the design for the city, which includes a central square intersected by four main roads leading to the city. These roads are: the road from Al Madam, the road to Al Badayer, the road leading to Mahafiz and Al Bataeh, and the road from Sharjah Sports City.
The stadium is designed as an architectural icon, embodying a bird soaring over sand dunes. It consists of two parts: a platform and grandstand resembling undulating sand dunes, and a large cover shaped like a bird with outstretched wings. The cover changes colour with time – silver in sunlight and golden-red at night.
The design is environmentally conscious, harmonising with the natural characteristics of the site and reflecting attributes akin to an athlete's keen eyesight, speed, and strength. The stadium meets all requirements for hosting local, regional, and global events.
Al Suwaidi noted that this stadium is considered the "first nucleus" and phase one of the Sports City project. He added that it has been designed to meet all requirements for hosting local, regional, and global events.
Immediate Construction Plans
Al Suwaidi added, "In accordance with the directives of H.H. Dr. Sheikh Sultan bin Muhammad Al Qasimi, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Sharjah, we will immediately proceed with completing the detailed designs for the Sports City Stadium and commence its construction to ensure it is ready to serve athletes, all clubs in the emirate, and the sports sector as soon as possible."
The central square will feature four main roads leading into it: from Al Madam, to Al Badayer, leading to Mahafiz and Al Bataeh, and from Sharjah Sports City. At its centre will be "Sports City Stadium."
The colour-changing cover reflects environmental consciousness while blending with natural surroundings. This design mirrors an athlete's attributes similar to a falcon's keen eyesight.
The new Sports City will cater to both team sports like football as well as individual sports such as athletics. This initiative aims to boost sports infrastructure in Sharjah significantly.
