Sharjah Public Libraries Marks Centenary With Year-Long Celebration Of Cultural Achievements

Under the guidance of His Highness Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi and Sheikha Bodour bint Sultan Al Qasimi, Sharjah is celebrating 100 years of cultural contributions through its public libraries. The centennial event will feature activities throughout 2025, starting with a ceremony at Sharjah Fort on 29th January. This celebration marks a century since the UAE's first public library was established in 1925 by Sheikh Sultan bin Saqr Al Qasimi.

The Sharjah Public Libraries (SPL) have been pivotal in the emirate’s cultural journey. Renamed in 2011 and relocated to Cultural Square, they continue to play a significant role in shaping future generations. SPL has planned a year-long agenda for its centennial, collaborating with over 13 government entities. The activities focus on four themes: ‘Literary Beginnings’, ‘Cultural Civilisation’, ‘Horizons of Literature and Poetry’, and ‘Cultural Sustainability’.

Celebrating 100 Years of Sharjah Public Libraries

Sheikha Bodour Al Qasimi described the centennial as a milestone in Sharjah’s cultural journey. She highlighted SPL's evolution into a model of cultural progress in the UAE, rooted in a legacy that inspires future generations. She emphasised that public libraries have been foundational to Sharjah’s cultural renaissance, empowering communities through knowledge and serving as invaluable resources.

Sheikha Bodour stated, "H.H. Sheikh Dr. Sultan Al Qasimi has instilled in us the belief that books and knowledge are the bedrock of thriving nations. Their empowerment is not merely a cultural priority but a vital cornerstone for the advancement and prosperity of societies." This vision has positioned Sharjah as a leader in promoting libraries as catalysts for global cultural growth.

The history of SPL reflects its rich legacy and development over time. Established by Sheikh Sultan bin Saqr Al Qasimi, it began as Al Qasimia Library within his palace. During Sheikh Saqr bin Sultan Al Qasimi’s rule, it remained at Sharjah Fort until moving to Al Mudheef in 1956.

Later, under Sheikh Khalid bin Mohammed Al Qasimi and subsequently His Highness Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, the library continued to evolve. In 1980, it moved to Africa Hall's upper floor as Sharjah Library before relocating to the Cultural Centre in 1987 and University City in 1988. In 2011, it found its current home at Cultural Palace Square.

Sheikha Bodour further remarked on SPL’s centennial: "The centennial of SPL pays homage to the visionary efforts of our forefathers who laid the groundwork for knowledge and learning in the emirate." This celebration honours their legacy while reaffirming dedication to strengthening libraries’ impact on society.

The centennial celebration underscores SPL's role as an anchor of Sharjah’s cultural heritage, guiding present initiatives and illuminating future paths towards prosperity.
