Sharjah International Film Festival For Children And Youth Launches Its 11th Edition With Focus On Palestinian Cinema
The 11th Sharjah International Film Festival for Children and Youth began on 6th October 2024. Held under the patronage of H.H. Sheikha Jawaher bint Mohammed Al Qasimi, it celebrates achievements in film while focusing on nurturing future generations. The event welcomed notable figures like Sheikh Fahim bin Sultan Al Qasimi and Sheikha Jawaher bint Abdullah Al Qasimi, alongside artists, directors, and international guests.
During the opening ceremony at the Sharjah Academy for Performing Arts, the "Guest of Honor" initiative was launched, with Palestine being honoured as the inaugural guest. This tribute acknowledges Palestine’s rich heritage and contributions to Arab cinema. The festival will run until 12th October, showcasing a selection of Palestinian films that explore its society, culture, and cinematic history.

The festival highlights Palestinian filmmaking's evolution, which has gained international acclaim, including Academy Award nominations in the Best Foreign Film category. Sheikha Jawaher bint Abdullah Al Qasimi emphasised that the festival aligns with Sharjah’s vision to foster a creative generation rooted in cultural heritage and societal values.
She stated, "The festival celebrates cinematic masterpieces under the embrace of Sharjah, a city devoted to supporting children and preparing them for the future, embodying the visions of H.H. Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi and H.H. Sheikha Jawaher bint Muhammad Al Qasimi. Together, they continue to work toward elevating the intellectual and cultural awareness of children and youth by empowering them and integrating them into the development process."
Abdullah bin Haider remarked on the festival's role in promoting art and creativity among youth. He noted its success in bridging young people's dreams with cinema's vast world. As technological advancements shape cinema, films offer a platform for young people to express their visions.

Addressing Challenges Faced by Youth
Yasmine Al-Masry highlighted storytelling's power in connecting cultures amid challenges faced by Arab youth. She stressed support for Palestinian youth deprived of basic rights like health and education. "Young people in the Arab world make up nearly 30 percent of the population," she said.
"In a region where 372 million people speak Arabic, we cannot ignore the harsh realities faced by Palestinian youth, who are deprived of basic rights like health and education. This is not just a political crisis; it is a humanitarian one."
Acknowledging Lifetime Contributions
The festival honoured Jaber Naghmoush, Huda Hussein, and Yousra with Lifetime Achievement Awards for their significant influence on arts through drama, theatre, and film. Their work has left an enduring mark on Arab culture's collective memory.
The jury panel was also announced with 18 renowned directors evaluating submissions across categories such as "International Short Films" and "Animated Short Films". Films made by children will be judged by emerging jurors debuting at this year’s event.
Diverse Global Participation
This year’s festival features 100 films from over 90 countries including Zimbabwe's first participation. Other countries include Oman, Egypt, France, Iran, Russia, Saudi Arabia, Palestine, South Korea, Spain, and Germany.
The "Green Carpet" platform will premiere three films in the Middle East: Amakor from Kuwait directed by Ahmed Al-Khodary; The Teacher directed by Farah Nabulsi; Diplodocus co-produced by Slovakia Czech Republic Poland.
