Sharjah Airport Reaffirms Commitment To Sustainability On World Energy Day
Sharjah International Airport Authority celebrated World Energy Day on 22nd October by reinforcing its dedication to the UAE’s Vision 2050 goals for sustainability and environmental protection. The airport is actively working on projects to enhance energy efficiency, reduce carbon emissions, and promote eco-friendly practices.
Ali Salim Al Midfa, Chairman of Sharjah International Airport Authority, emphasised that World Energy Day underscores the UAE’s continuous efforts in promoting sustainability and climate action. He noted that energy efficiency is crucial for reducing emissions and using resources wisely, aligning with national objectives.

Sharjah Airport has renewed its Carbon Neutrality +3 certification for the fourth year in a row. This achievement makes it the only airport in the Arabian Gulf region recognised by Airports Council International (ACI) for this milestone. It was also the first carbon-neutral airport in the GCC and second in the Middle East, showcasing Sharjah as a leader in environmental sustainability.
Despite a significant increase in passenger numbers—over 9.1 million passengers passed through the airport in H1 2025, marking a 10 percent rise from the previous year—the airport has turned this challenge into an opportunity for innovation. It focuses on initiatives centred around waste reduction, reuse, and recycling.
Al Midfa announced that Sharjah Airport has successfully recycled all its wastewater, now used to water green spaces. The airport plans to expand its wastewater treatment facility to handle up to 3,000 cubic metres daily. Solar lights have been installed in parking lots and walkways, with future plans to adopt more smart technology for heating and lighting.
Leading Green Aviation
The airport's green initiatives extend to areas like solar energy, electric vehicles, agriculture, and waste management. This push not only strengthens its role as a leader in green aviation but also supports the country’s goal of achieving climate neutrality by 2050. Overall, Sharjah is positioning itself as an eco-friendly destination within the aviation industry.
"World Energy Day highlights the UAE’s ongoing efforts to promote sustainability and climate action," said Al Midfa. "Energy efficiency is central to reducing emissions and using resources wisely in line with national goals."
The commitment of Sharjah International Airport Authority towards sustainability reflects broader national ambitions. By implementing innovative solutions and maintaining high standards of environmental responsibility, Sharjah continues to set an example within the region.
