Saudi Fund For Development Enhances Water Security In Somalia With $2 Million Grant Initiative

The Saudi Fund for Development (SFD) has committed $2 million to Somalia, aiming to improve water access in rural areas. Sultan Abdulrahman Al-Marshad, CEO of SFD, and Bihi Egeh, Somalia's Finance Minister, formalised this agreement. The initiative is part of the Saudi Well Drilling and Rural Development Program in Africa's fifth phase.

Saudi Ambassador to Somalia Ahmed bin Mohammed Al-Mawlid was present at the signing ceremony. The program focuses on drilling wells and creating solar-powered water networks. This effort aims to enhance water and food security by providing safe drinking water and reducing reliance on contaminated sources.

SFD Boosts Water Security in Somalia

The Saudi Well Drilling and Rural Development Program in Africa is a key element of the Kingdom's development efforts through the SFD. Since its inception in 1982, the program has addressed African nations' needs by funding over 10,000 potable water facilities across 20 countries.

These projects have been valued at around $330 million, delivering clean drinking water to more than 5 million people. This has significantly mitigated drought impacts in rural regions. The program exemplifies Saudi Arabia's commitment to supporting developing countries through sustainable initiatives.

This memorandum highlights the SFD’s dedication to helping developing nations overcome obstacles to progress and achieve development goals. It also underscores the importance of international cooperation in advancing Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

The initiative not only addresses immediate water scarcity but also contributes to long-term sustainability by using renewable energy sources like solar power. This approach aligns with global efforts to promote environmental sustainability while meeting essential human needs.

By focusing on clean water access, the SFD aims to improve living conditions and health outcomes in Somalia's rural communities. This grant represents a significant step towards enhancing quality of life and fostering resilience against environmental challenges.
