SBA Engages Global Publishers At The 76th Frankfurt International Book Fair To Boost Cultural Exchange

The Sharjah Book Authority (SBA) recently engaged in 37 significant meetings at the 76th Frankfurt International Book Fair in Germany. These discussions aimed to boost Sharjah's cultural prominence globally. The SBA, representing key cultural institutions from the emirate, highlighted opportunities at the upcoming 43rd Sharjah International Book Fair (SIBF). They secured commitments from major European and international publishers to participate.

During the event, SBA showcased Sharjah's vibrant cultural project envisioned by H.H. Sheikh Dr Sultan bin Mohammad Al Qasimi. This initiative positions the emirate as a dynamic cultural hub and a leader in global publishing and creative industries. The fair featured over 7,500 participants from more than 100 countries, hosting over 4,000 events with an attendance exceeding 280,000 visitors.

SBA Strengthens Global Publishing Ties at FIBF

SBA met with notable publishers such as Barefoot Books, Penguin Random House, Supadu, Ingram, S&S, Shelf Awareness, Aegnita Agency, Walker/Candlewick, Independent Book Publishers Association, Harper, VitalSource, Ingram Publishing Services, and PRH. Discussions also included Andrews McMeel, Spanish Publishers Association, Ulysses Press, Macmillan US, PW, Combined Books, Diversion Books, INTERLINK, New York University, Forefront EPS Learning and PUB PERSPECTIVES.

The meetings resulted in commitments from European and international publishers to join the SIBF. Conversations focused on opportunities provided by SBA’s conferences and global events like the Sharjah Publishers Conference and Sharjah International Library Conference. These initiatives have been pivotal in advancing both local and international publishing industries.

SBA also emphasized opportunities for buying and selling publishing rights through the Sharjah International Rights Agency. They discussed increasing translation exchanges between different cultures. These efforts aim to enhance cross-cultural dialogue and strengthen partnerships with cultural hubs worldwide.

Ahmed bin Rakkad Al Ameri commented on their participation: "Under the leadership of H.H. Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi...the emirate consistently raises the UAE flag and champions Emirati and Arab culture on the global stage through its active involvement in international conferences...This year we have achieved a significant milestone by securing participation from a large number of leading international publishers in the 43rd SIBF."

Al Ameri further stated: "Guided by Sheikha Bodour bint Sultan Al Qasimi...we engaged in strategic meetings with key European...publishers as part of an intensive agenda designed to fulfil our mission of strengthening partnerships with cultural hubs...advancing cross-cultural dialogue...and boosting the publishing...sectors."

The SBA's efforts at the Frankfurt Book Fair underscore its commitment to enhancing Sharjah's role in global culture and publishing. Through strategic partnerships and initiatives like SIBF and related conferences, they continue to foster a thriving knowledge-based society while promoting Emirati culture internationally.
