Saudi Fund For Development Signs Agreements For 205 Million USD In Serbia

In a significant move to bolster Serbia's agriculture, education, and energy sectors, the Saudi Fund for Development (SFD) has inked a trio of loan agreements with the Balkan nation, channeling $205 million into pivotal projects. This strategic collaboration not only marks SFD's inaugural venture in Serbia but also paves the way for the country's socioeconomic advancement on a long-term basis. The signing ceremony saw the participation of H.E. Sultan Al-Marshad, CEO of SFD, and Serbia's Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister, H.E. Siniša Mali, with Mr. Ali Aldossary, the Deputy Ambassador of Saudi Arabia to Bosnia & Herzegovina, also in attendance.

H.E. Siniša Mali expressed his enthusiasm about the partnership, stating, "It is a great pleasure to sign three important agreements with the Saudi Fund for Development, which is the first concrete step after last year's signing of the Memorandum of Understanding. We are grateful for the support. The projects for which this money is intended will contribute to the creation of new jobs, strengthening of our economy, and better positioning of the Republic of Serbia in the world scientific community. The agreements will also reinforce the long-term partnership between the Republic of Serbia and the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and contribute to the implementation and development of important projects in our country."

The financial infusion from these agreements will be allocated to three major projects. Firstly, $75 million will enhance irrigation infrastructure across various regions, focusing on water management and agricultural efficiency. An additional $65 million is earmarked for constructing the Bio4 Campus in Belgrade, aiming to foster scientific research in biotechnologies. The remaining $65 million is allocated for expanding Serbia's energy infrastructure, a crucial step toward bolstering the country's power supply reliability and its integration into the broader European electricity network.

A cornerstone of the funding, the Strengthen Irrigation Infrastructure in Different Areas Project, is set to revolutionize water management in Serbia. By constructing and rehabilitating water systems and creating a new irrigation network extending over 230 km, the initiative targets agricultural hotspots like Novi Slankamen and Jasenicke Kapi. The ultimate goal is to increase crop yields and provide stable water distribution, especially during droughts, thereby promoting agricultural sustainability.

The construction of the Bio4 Campus at the University of Belgrade represents a leap forward in scientific research within Serbia. This cutting-edge center will host a confluence of six faculties, nine scientific institutes, and top-tier laboratories, including a highly specialized biosafety level 3 lab. It’s designed to be a hub of interdisciplinary collaboration, driving innovation in biology, medicine, and beyond, thus positioning Serbia as a leader in global scientific endeavors.

With a focus on energy, the Development of Transmission System Operator (Phase 1) Project aims to construct a new 400 kV transmission line and upgrade existing substations. This enhancement of Serbia's energy infrastructure is crucial for improving power supply reliability and facilitating the country's integration into the Trans-Balkan Electricity Corridor, connecting it more closely with the European electricity market.

Sultan Al-Marshad, SFD's CEO, reflected on the initiative's broader implications, "Supporting sustainable development through strategic funding in infrastructure and education is central to our mission. This partnership with Serbia underscores our commitment to fostering innovation, enhancing agricultural productivity, and improving energy security in line with the Sustainable Development Goals. The projects we are funding will help create lasting benefits for the Serbian people and contribute to their socioeconomic development."

The SFD, as Saudi Arabia's development arm, is renowned for its global contributions to sustainable growth, having funded over 800 projects across more than 100 countries with a total investment of $20 billion. Celebrating half a century of facilitating international development in 2024, the SFD's expansion into Serbia and 10 other new countries underscores its ongoing commitment to fostering global progress and innovation.

This collaboration between Serbia and the SFD is a testament to the power of international partnerships in achieving sustainable development goals. Through strategic investments in key sectors, the initiative not only promises to enhance Serbia's economic and scientific standing but also strengthens the bonds between Serbia and Saudi Arabia, setting a solid foundation for future cooperation.
