Saqr Ghobash Highlights Role Of Technology And Innovation For Sustainable Development At 149th IPU Assembly
Saqr Ghobash, Speaker of the Federal National Council (FNC), led the UAE delegation at the 149th Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) General Assembly in Geneva. He emphasised that science, technology, and innovation are vital for sustainable development and national welfare. These elements are crucial in tackling both natural and human-made challenges like climate change, food security, water scarcity, and energy issues.
Ghobash highlighted that science, technology, and innovation should be universally accessible rather than exclusive privileges. He stressed their role in bridging gaps between countries instead of widening them. Additionally, he underscored the importance of reinforcing ethical values for individuals, societies, and institutions through these advancements.
The UAE has made significant progress in digital technology and artificial intelligence. This positions the country as a leading model both regionally and globally. Quoting President His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Ghobash conveyed that managing emerging technologies responsibly is essential for sustainable development and prosperity.
The UAE has invested approximately US$90 billion in over 100 national initiatives across sectors like education, health, energy, and water. Artificial intelligence is a primary growth sector within these initiatives. Ghobash urged legislative bodies to adopt a two-pronged approach: domestically by enacting laws to foster investment in science and technology, and internationally by advocating for flexible parliamentary cooperation to establish global regulations.
Ghobash addressed the ongoing conflicts affecting civilians in Palestine and Lebanon. He reaffirmed the UAE’s stance calling for an immediate cessation of the war in Gaza. The protection of civilian lives and urgent aid delivery to Gaza were emphasised. He also stressed implementing relevant UN resolutions on the Palestinian-Israeli conflict to achieve a two-state solution.
"While discussing technology and its role in achieving a sustainable and peaceful future," Ghobash stated, "we must not forget those who have been deprived of living in peace—civilians in Palestine and Lebanon who have long suffered from the ravages of ongoing wars and conflict in the region."
He reiterated the UAE's call for ending the current conflict in Lebanon. Full implementation of UN Resolution 1701 was urged to secure peace and stability there. This would enhance security, peace, and prosperity throughout the Middle East.
