Saqr Ghobash And Dr. Sahiba Gafarova Discuss Strengthening Parliamentary Cooperation Between UAE And Azerbaijan
Saqr Ghobash, Speaker of the Federal National Council (FNC), recently visited Azerbaijan, leading an FNC delegation. During this official visit, he met with Dr. Sahiba Gafarova, Speaker of the Milli Majlis (National Assembly) of Azerbaijan. Ghobash expressed gratitude for the warm reception from the Azerbaijani government and people.
Dr. Sahiba welcomed Ghobash and his team, appreciating their participation in the international parliamentary conference. She stressed the National Assembly's commitment to enhancing cooperation and parliamentary ties with the UAE by sharing expertise and experiences that benefit both nations.
Ghobash highlighted the robust bilateral relations between the UAE and Azerbaijan, particularly in economic and trade sectors. The Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA), signed in September 2025, has significantly boosted non-oil trade to US$2.4 billion in 2024, a 43% increase from 2023.
He also praised mutual investments and cooperation in green energy and climate action. This collaboration is especially relevant as the UAE hosts COP28 and Azerbaijan prepares for COP29, showcasing their commitment to environmental sustainability.
The Memorandum of Understanding signed between the two parliaments in May 2025 was highlighted by Ghobash as a crucial framework for strengthening parliamentary partnerships. It aims to enhance coordination in regional and international forums while facilitating delegation exchanges and legislative expertise sharing.
Ghobash emphasised cultural cooperation as a means to foster dialogue and connections between people from both countries. He reiterated the UAE's support for peace efforts between Azerbaijan and Armenia, expressing hope for continued positive developments that would enhance security and prosperity in the Caucasus region.
International Conference Participation
During their meeting, Ghobash commended the organisation of the International Parliamentary Conference. He noted its importance in reinforcing constitutional experience, stability, and rule of law principles.
The conference provided a platform for discussing key issues affecting both nations while promoting mutual understanding through dialogue among international parliamentary representatives.
The discussions between Ghobash and Dr. Sahiba underscored a shared commitment to fostering stronger ties across various sectors. Both leaders recognised that continued collaboration would benefit their respective countries' interests on multiple fronts.
