Salem Bin Abdulrahman Launches 14th Age Forum To Empower Elderly Community In Sharjah

The 14th Age Forum, themed "Renewed Giving... Endless Leadership," was inaugurated by Sheikh Dr. Salem bin Abdulrahman Al Qasimi, Chairman of the Sharjah Ruler’s Office. Organised by the Sharjah Social Services Department (SSSD), the event took place at Al Jawaher Reception and Convention Centre. The ceremony began with the UAE national anthem, a Quran recitation, and a film titled "Endless Giving," which highlighted the elderly's role in preserving traditions and community values.

Senior X, a new platform celebrating senior citizens' wisdom and achievements, was launched during the forum. This initiative aims to showcase resilience and contributions beyond sixty, fostering intergenerational dialogue and inspiration globally. The forum also featured an exhibition displaying artistic and handicraft works by senior members of SSSD’s Asala Clubs, promoting creativity and engagement among the elderly.

Ahmed Nasser Al Naqbi, Executive Director of the Branch Affairs Sector at SSSD, welcomed attendees and emphasised Sharjah's commitment to empowering the elderly. He noted Sharjah's pioneering status as the first Arab city in WHO’s Global Network for Age-friendly Cities. Services like free healthcare, home nursing, medicine delivery, physiotherapy, and transport were highlighted as part of this vision.

Initiatives such as Intaj Centre integrate elderly artisans into the labour market, while Knowledge is Light enables seniors to learn reading and writing. These efforts reflect Sharjah’s dedication to enhancing elderly well-being and participation in society.

The forum featured two main panel discussions: "Success Stories after Sixty" and "Positive Ageing and Well-being." The first session highlighted individuals who excelled post-retirement. Abdullah Belhaif Al Nuaimi shared his public service journey and poetry's cultural significance. Khamis bin Salem Al Suwaidi stressed discipline, respect for elders, and Islamic values.

The second discussion explored mental health, independence, and age-friendly environments. Experts from local, regional, and international institutions participated alongside policymakers and senior citizen association representatives.

Recognising Contributions

Sheikh Dr. Salem honoured winners of the 4th Green Heart Award across four fields: Aisha Abdullah Al Adhab in culture, Mariam Hilal Al Zaabi in social work, Ghanem Obaid Al Alili in health, and Moza Ahmed Ibrahim in professional achievements. Participating institutions and teams were also acknowledged for their contributions.

The event attracted specialists in elderly care from various sectors. Notable attendees included Abdullah Mubarak bin Amer of Sharjah Police, Ali Ahmed Abu Ghazin from Sharjah Fish Resources Authority, Mariam Majid Al Shamsi of SSSD, along with other officials and guests.

This gathering underscored Sharjah's ongoing efforts to support its senior citizens through innovative platforms like Senior X while celebrating their invaluable contributions to society.
