SAF Invites Applications For Three Open Calls In Publishing, Cinema, And Comics
The Sharjah Art Foundation (SAF) has opened applications for three initiatives in cinema, publishing, and comic storytelling. These programs aim to support contemporary works by artists and cultural producers globally. Filmmakers are invited to submit their films for the eighth Short Film Production Grant at the Sharjah Film Platform, an annual festival celebrating independent cinema.
The Short Film Production Grant supports filmmakers in completing short films that offer contemporary cinematic perspectives. The winning film must premiere at a future edition of the platform. Filmmakers from any region or genre can apply, provided their film is under 50 minutes, including its introduction.

A publishing grant has been launched by SAF, inviting cultural professionals such as researchers, writers, translators, editors, publishers, and nonprofit institutions to submit project proposals. A total fund of $30,000 will be distributed among several winners. Projects should demonstrate intellectual and visual excellence.
This grant focuses on underrepresented voices in experimental and critical publishing from regions like Southwest Asia, North Africa, the Caribbean, the Pacific, the Americas, the former Soviet Union, and the Balkans. It also includes diaspora contexts in Western countries.
Additionally, contributions are being sought for "Corniche," a comic anthology featuring artists from the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC). This initiative aims to enhance participation and creative diversity within the publication. "Corniche" welcomes various storytelling formats including personal narratives and sci-fi.
Selected artists will participate in a three-day forum to exchange ideas before finalizing their stories. Applications for this opportunity remain open until 11:59 PM UAE time on June 30, 2025.
For filmmakers applying for the Short Film Production Grant, a three-minute introductory video is required. This video should showcase the film's vision including its genre and plot while highlighting originality and artistic skills.
The total prize pool for winning filmmakers is AED 120,000 (approximately US$ 30,000), divided based on production needs and number of winners. Applications must be submitted by 11:59 PM UAE time on June 19, 2025.
The deadline for submitting proposals for the publishing grant is August 17, 2025. Projects should reflect material excellence alongside intellectual and visual quality to qualify for consideration.
