RTA Partners With Pony.ai To Launch Autonomous Vehicle Pilot Trials In Dubai
Dubai's Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has entered into a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Pony.ai to initiate pilot tests for autonomous vehicles in the emirate. These trials are set to start later this year, aiming for a fully driverless commercial service by 2026. The collaboration marks a significant step towards integrating advanced autonomous driving technologies in Dubai.
Pony.ai recently introduced its seventh generation of autonomous vehicles, developed alongside automotive giants like Toyota, GAC, and BAIC. These vehicles boast cutting-edge AI algorithms and an array of sensors such as lidars, radars, and cameras. This technology ensures precise navigation and safety under diverse road and weather conditions.

The MoU was signed by Ahmed Hashim Bahrozyan, CEO of Public Transport Agency for RTA, and Ann Shi, Vice President of Strategy and Business Development for Pony.ai. The signing ceremony was attended by Mattar Al Tayer, Director General of RTA, and Dr. Leo Wang, CFO of Pony.ai, along with other officials from both organisations.
Pony.ai has also partnered with tech firms like Tencent and Alibaba to integrate robotaxi services into platforms such as WeChat and Alipay. This integration aims to enhance the accessibility and convenience of autonomous mobility services across various digital platforms.
Mattar Al Tayer praised the MoU with Pony.ai, highlighting its role in supporting Dubai's efforts to adopt autonomous mobility solutions. He noted that this partnership reinforces Dubai's position as a leader in future mobility on a global scale.
Future Mobility Vision
Al Tayer stated: "RTA’s continued expansion of partnerships with leading global companies in the field of autonomous mobility marks a key step towards achieving the Dubai Smart Self-Driving Transport Strategy, which aims to convert 25% of all trips in Dubai into autonomous journeys across various modes of transport by 2030."
The operation of autonomous taxis is expected to improve transport systems by facilitating public transport users' movement. It aligns with the first and last-mile strategy, enhancing residents' quality of life while improving road safety and daily mobility convenience throughout Dubai.
Regional Impact
Dr. Leo Wang emphasised the regional importance of this partnership: "The collaboration with Dubai RTA exemplifies our commitment to deploying Level 4 autonomous technology in strategic global markets. By aligning our technological capabilities with RTA's visionary leadership, we're establishing foundational standards for intelligent transportation ecosystems across the MENA region."
The advancement of autonomous mobility is becoming increasingly tangible as global companies accelerate technology development. Governments are also working on infrastructure and regulatory frameworks necessary for these vehicles' operation.
This initiative underscores RTA's dedication to collaborating with global tech leaders to advance smart, efficient, and sustainable mobility solutions for the future.
