RTA Unveils Integrated Urban Project To Upgrade Umm Suqeim Street In Dubai

Dubai's Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has unveiled a comprehensive urban project to enhance Umm Suqeim Street, stretching from Jumeirah Street to Al Khail Road. This initiative aims to improve traffic flow, support urban growth, and elevate the quality of life for residents and visitors. It complements ongoing upgrades from Al Khail Road to Emirates Road, ensuring seamless travel over 20 kilometres from Jumeirah to Al Qudra Road.

The project is part of a broader master plan by RTA to enhance Dubai's road network. It includes improvements to Jumeirah Street, Al Wasl Street, and Al Safa Street, with more details forthcoming. The initiative also strengthens connectivity across four major transport corridors: Sheikh Zayed Road, Al Khail Road, Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road, and Emirates Road.

RTA Upgrades Umm Suqeim Street in Dubai

Umm Suqeim Street's capacity will increase to accommodate 16,000 vehicles per hour in both directions. This upgrade will significantly reduce travel time between Jumeirah Street and Al Khail Road from 20 minutes to just six. The corridor will serve key residential areas like Jumeirah, Umm Suqeim, Al Manara, and others with over two million residents.

The project includes upgrading six major intersections along Umm Suqeim Street. These intersections are with Jumeirah Street, Al Wasl Street, Sheikh Zayed Road, First Al Khail Street, Al Asayel Street, and Al Khail Road. The plan involves constructing four bridges and three tunnels with a total length of 4,100 metres.

Beyond road expansion, the project integrates creative enhancements into the urban landscape. It features upgraded pedestrian walkways and a dedicated cycling track alongside vibrant urban spaces designed for community interaction. These elements aim to create inclusive environments that foster social engagement.

A direct link between Mall of the Emirates Metro Station and nearby residential communities is also established. This ensures smooth access between these areas and the metro through targeted improvements.

Progress on Current Works

RTA is advancing work on a 4.6-kilometre section of Umm Suqeim Street from its intersection with Al Khail Road to Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road. This phase includes redeveloping the intersection at Al Barsha South near Kings’ School with an 800-metre tunnel featuring four lanes in each direction.

The construction has surpassed 70% completion with an opening scheduled for the third quarter of this year. Concurrently, RTA has initiated another project to upgrade key intersections along Al Qudra Road.

Al Qudra Road Enhancements

This segment extends from Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road through Sheikh Zayed bin Hamdan Al Nahyan Street up to Emirates Road. The scope includes constructing bridges totalling 2,700 metres in length and widening 11.6 kilometres of existing road.

Upon completion, this phase will significantly boost the overall capacity of Al Qudra Road while reducing travel time from 9.4 minutes to just 2.8 minutes.

To improve accessibility around developments along Sheikh Zayed bin Hamdan Al Nahyan Street, the project includes building three kilometres of service roads on both sides.
