UAE's Global Water Resilience Initiatives In Preparation For COP29 And Beyond

The United Nations General Assembly has confirmed the United Arab Emirates and Senegal as co-hosts for the upcoming UN Water Conference in December 2026. This event, set to take place in the UAE, aims to advance Sustainable Development Goal 6 (SDG6), focusing on clean water, sanitation, and sustainable water management. The conference will highlight innovations and shared solutions from regions most affected by water scarcity.

This conference marks a significant collaboration between two Global South nations. It aims to shift global water discussions towards regions facing severe water challenges. According to UN research, half of the world's population lacks basic sanitation, while a quarter lacks safe drinking water. Globally, 80% of people face serious threats to their water supply.

The UAE's arid climate has historically influenced its approach to water management. Abdulla Balalaa, Assistant Minister of Foreign Affairs for Energy and Sustainable Affairs, stated, "Water is our life force, and water resiliency is vital to achieving all Sustainable Development Goals." The UAE plans to leverage ancestral knowledge, research, and global partnerships for a sustainable water future.

Innovative Water Solutions

The UAE is investing heavily in future-proofing its water systems. This includes over 140 desalination plants like the Taweelah Reverse Osmosis facility in Abu Dhabi. These initiatives use low-carbon technologies and renewable energy sources such as solar power to enhance desalinated water production.

UAE Water Security Strategy 2036

The UAE Water Security Strategy 2036 outlines a roadmap for sustainable water access. It aims for the safe reuse of 95% of treated water and supplying over 75% of drinking water through reverse osmosis technology. This strategy serves as a model for achieving sustainable water access globally.

Global Initiatives and Partnerships

The UAE's Clean Rivers initiative, launched in Abu Dhabi in 2023, focuses on reducing plastic waste entering oceans through river systems. It supports projects like a UN Development Programme aiming to remove 5,000 tonnes of plastic from Indonesian rivers over three years.

Mohamed bin Zayed Water Initiative

Launched in 2024, the Mohamed bin Zayed Water Initiative (MBZWI) addresses global water scarcity issues. Its first major project involved partnering with XPRIZE with a $150 million investment. This partnership launched the XPrize Water Scarcity competition to promote innovative desalination technologies worldwide.

International cooperation remains crucial in tackling water scarcity challenges. The Freshwater Challenge at the UN 2023 Water Conference saw commitments from 38 nations to protect freshwater ecosystems by 2030. The upcoming UN Water Conference will build on this momentum.

As COP29 approaches, the UAE continues its commitment to accelerating global action on water issues through innovation and international collaboration. The focus remains on fostering sustainable development and enhancing global resilience against water scarcity challenges.
