G20 Capital Rio De Janeiro Hosts Key Economic And Social Meetings In 2024

Until Friday, Rio de Janeiro will host high-level meetings between economic authorities from G20 countries. The week will also feature events with ministers from social sectors, according to Agência Brasil, a partner of WAM.

The G20 Ministers of Development recognised technology as a key tool for reducing global inequalities. In a document released on Monday, the group emphasised the importance of technology transfer, access to digital technologies, and artificial intelligence benefits to reduce social and economic disparities.

The document, titled the G20 Development Ministerial Declaration to Reduce Inequalities, states: "This can enable rapid transformation, combat inequalities within and between countries, and accelerate the achievement of sustainable development in its three dimensions - economic, social, and environmental - as well as the delivery of public services."

The ministers reaffirmed their commitment to reducing digital disparities. They aim to promote inclusive data use for development and leverage safe, secure AI for all in a responsible manner. Improving access to digital services and infrastructure is also a priority.

The Development Meeting within the G20 framework concludes this Tuesday. The focus is on leveraging digital transformation opportunities to drive sustainable and inclusive growth.

Finance Track Discussions

In Rio de Janeiro, representatives of finance ministers and central bank governors from G20 member countries will meet. These meetings are part of the Finance Track, which deals with economic issues.

Delegations will draft a joint document for finance ministers and central bank governors. Their meetings on Thursday and Friday will address key topics for the G20 summit on 18th and 19th November in Rio de Janeiro.

Global Alliance Against Hunger and Poverty

This week’s highlight includes the pre-launch of the Global Alliance Against Hunger and Poverty. This event is one of Brazil’s G20 presidency priorities and will take place on Wednesday with President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva attending.

The Brazilian government aims to develop actions to eradicate global poverty. This involves raising resources, distributing them effectively, and sharing successful experiences globally.

G20 Overview

The G20 comprises South Africa, Germany, Saudi Arabia, Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Canada, China, South Korea, the United States, France, India, Indonesia, Italy, Japan, Mexico, the United Kingdom, Russia, Turkey, the European Union, and the African Union.
