Prickly Pears Enhance Aseer Markets And Attract Tourists With Nutritional Benefits

In the Aseer region, the annual arrival of prickly pears, locally called Al-Barshumi, signals a unique season that combines nutritional benefits with tourism allure. This period revitalises fruit markets as tourists and locals flock to buy and savour the fruit. The roads leading to parks and markets are vibrant with the pear's diverse hues, from green to yellow to red, showcasing seasonal agriculture's role in boosting commerce and rural tourism.

Agricultural engineer Hassan Al-Wadii from the National Center for the Prevention and Control of Plant Pests and Animal Diseases (Weqaa) explained that prickly pears belong to the cactus family. These succulents thrive in hot, arid regions globally. Among its varieties, the Indian prickly pear is most widespread, displaying colours like yellow, red, orange, and light green. Other types include the purple prickly pear with dark flowers and fruit, the wild variety found in dry areas, and a bright red type known for its rich pigment.

Prickly pears offer numerous health benefits. They are high in fibre which aids digestion and contain vitamin C that enhances immunity. Additionally, they provide essential minerals such as potassium, magnesium, and calcium.
