Poland Sees WTO Meet in UAE as Key to Rebuilding Global Economic Trust

In a recent dialogue with the Emirates News Agency (WAM), Jacek Tomczak, the Polish Deputy Minister for Development and Technology, expressed Poland's anticipation for the World Trade Organisation’s (WTO) 13th Ministerial Conference (MC13) in Abu Dhabi. Scheduled from 26th to 29th February 2024, the conference is seen as a critical platform for initiating reforms aimed at restoring trust in international economic relations. Tomczak emphasized the necessity of revamping the WTO's dispute settlement system to ensure its effective functioning.

The Deputy Minister highlighted that the conference should not only focus on procedural reforms but also tackle substantive issues such as the regulation of prohibited subsidies. This approach, according to Tomczak, is essential for maintaining a level playing field across all trading nations. Furthermore, he pointed out the importance of enhancing WTO’s roles in monitoring, deliberation, and negotiation on contemporary trade matters.

WTO Meet: A Step Towards Global Trust Rebuild

Following its successful organization of COP28 in December 2023, the UAE is gearing up to host MC13 in Abu Dhabi. The event will gather representatives from 164 countries and trading blocs, underlining the UAE's significant role in facilitating global trade discussions. Tomczak lauded the UAE's efforts in this regard and expressed Poland's readiness to collaborate closely with the UAE to achieve fruitful outcomes during the conference.

MC13 aims to tackle various pressing issues facing global trade today, including supply-chain disruptions, inflation, protectionism, and climate change. The conference will also explore avenues to enhance investments in trade technologies that foster sustainable and resilient supply chains. Tomczak reaffirmed Poland’s commitment to supporting environmental and climate considerations within the conference discussions.

Other critical topics on MC13’s agenda include fisheries subsidies, food security, e-commerce, and facilitating investments for trade development. As part of the European Union, Poland will back the European Commission in its endeavors to reinforce the WTO as a central, multilateral, and rules-based trading system.

Strengthening Polish-UAE Ties

Over the past three years, Poland has significantly bolstered its trade and investment cooperation with the UAE. Tomczak expressed optimism about further enhancing this partnership, particularly in areas such as investment, finance, renewable energy, and advanced technologies. The bilateral relationship was further strengthened by two high-level visits by the Polish President to the UAE in 2023.

Tomczak also highlighted the UAE’s Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreements (CEPA) initiative launched in 2021. Aimed at establishing more open and mutually beneficial trading relations, CEPA has already seen agreements with 11 countries including India, Indonesia, Israel, Türkiye, and South Korea among others. These agreements are a testament to the UAE’s ambitious goals to build a comprehensive free trade network with global partners.

The upcoming MC13 presents an invaluable opportunity for bilateral and multilateral discussions that could benefit Poland, the UAE, and other participating nations. Through collaborative efforts and a focus on substantive reforms, there is a hopeful outlook towards fostering a more resilient and equitable global trading system.
