FAO Praises Launch Of Plant The Emirates Programme For Sustainable Agriculture In UAE
The Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) has shown robust support for the UAE's "Plant the Emirates" programme. This initiative, launched by His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, aims to enhance agricultural growth and food security in the country. The programme was introduced during a Cabinet meeting in Dubai's Al Marmoom region.
The initiative is rooted in the legacy of the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, promoting agriculture in homes and schools. It seeks to engage younger generations in sustainable practices for a secure food future. A key element is the National Agricultural Center, which will drive innovation and partnerships within agriculture.

The National Agricultural Center aims to improve productivity and sustainability, supporting the UAE's strategic food security goals. It positions the nation as a regional leader in agricultural excellence. The centre will focus on increasing productive farms by 20 percent and boosting organic farms by 25 percent by 2030.
Kayan Akram Jaff, Head of Mission of FAO Subregional Office for the Gulf Cooperation Council and Yemen, stated: "The 'Plant the Emirates' initiative is a vital step toward ensuring food security and promoting sustainable agricultural practices in the region." Jaff commended UAE leadership for its commitment to fostering a resilient agricultural sector.
The programme also aims to adopt climate-smart practices in 30 percent of farms and reduce agricultural waste by 50 percent by 2030. These ambitious targets reflect the UAE's dedication to enhancing agricultural productivity and ensuring sustainable food security.
"We commend the United Arab Emirates' leadership for its commitment to fostering a resilient agricultural sector that not only feeds its people but also contributes to global sustainability efforts," Jaff added. He expressed anticipation for positive outcomes from this initiative.
Reducing Import Reliance
"Plant the Emirates" emphasises local food production to lessen dependence on imports while promoting environmental sustainability. By involving various stakeholders, including government agencies and local communities, it seeks a unified approach to agricultural development that can serve as a model globally.
This forward-thinking approach ensures that younger generations are engaged in sustainable practices, securing a stable food future for all. The programme aligns with national goals while addressing global sustainability challenges through innovative solutions.
