Oman's Rich And Honourable History Highlighted By Sharjah Ruler Sheikh Dr Sultan Al Qasimi

His Highness Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Sharjah, recently discussed his historical work on Sharjah TV. The conversation with Mohammed Hassan Khalaf, Director General of the Sharjah Broadcasting Authority, centred around his latest series, "The Portuguese in the Sea of Oman: Events in Annals from 1497 to 1757." This 21-volume collection explores the region's history and the strategic importance of the Sea of Oman.

During the interview, His Highness emphasised Oman's rich and honourable historical legacy. He provided an overview of his ongoing project to collect, translate, and publish historical documents. His journey began in 1985 after completing his doctorate and publishing his thesis as a book. He visited the India Office Library and Records in the UK, where he presented his thesis to the British Library's Director.

The Director showed interest in the sources referenced in His Highness's thesis. However, accessing British documents posed challenges for him. An elderly Indian woman he met at the library suggested that similar documents were available in Mumbai. This advice led him to continue his research there, overcoming obstacles along the way.

His Highness enlisted Fiona Wilkie from the British Library to assist with Portuguese documents. With approval from the Library Director, he arranged her early retirement and employed her directly to aid in gathering these records. His Highness covered all expenses himself to ensure this collaboration.

The British Library had preserved numerous Portuguese documents after recapturing Mumbai from Portuguese control. These efforts aimed to enhance understanding of the region's history. His Highness explained that transferring and translating these documents into the British Library’s collection took five years.

A Portuguese-speaking expert named Denver led this translation process with support from a dedicated team. Their work ensured that these valuable historical records were accessible for further study and research.

This extensive project highlights His Highness's commitment to preserving Oman's historical legacy through meticulous research and collaboration with experts worldwide.
