The Ministry of Energy and Minerals in Muscat has introduced a significant addition to Oman's energy sector, the new oil and gas concession, Area No 18, situated in the southern Sea of Oman.

Spanning an area of 21,140sqkm, this offshore block ranks among the country's largest and harbors unexplored hydrocarbon resources, offering promising prospects for energy exploration and development.

At the 'The Role of Geological Sciences in Shaping the Future of Energy' conference, organized by the American Association of Petroleum Geologists and hosted by Petroleum Development Oman, this announcement was made. The event was kicked off by Dr Sayyid Fahd al Julanda al Said, Vice-Chancellor of Sultan Qaboos University, emphasizing the significance of this development in the context of Oman's energy future, according to Muscat Daily.

Salim Nasser al Aufi, the Minister of Energy and Minerals, during the event, drew attention to the diverse geological landscape of Oman, which features oil and gas reserves scattered across deserts and coastal areas. He pointed out that this variety offers vast opportunities for energy exploration, which is crucial for the country’s economic prosperity.

Further expanding on Oman's strategy to enhance its oil and gas sector, H E Mohsen Hamad al Hadhrami, Undersecretary in the Ministry of Energy and Minerals, discussed a new approach focused on attracting foreign investments and boosting cooperation with OQ Exploration and Production, Oman's national energy operator. This strategy aims to maximize the utilization of Oman's energy resources efficiently.

Concerning Area No 18, Hadhrami shared details on the investment structure, noting that OQ Exploration and Production could cover up to 10% of exploration costs, with the possibility of increasing their share to 30% should the project proceed to commercial development. He further highlighted innovative contractual systems based on concession fees, inclusive of provisions for integrated gas exploration projects. He stated, "This package represents a significant step forward in driving sustainable development within the energy industry and bolstering the national economy in alignment with Oman Vision 2040."

Concession Area No 18 is poised to significantly contribute to the advancement of Oman's energy sector, reinforcing its status as a pivotal player in the global oil and gas market. This development aligns with Oman Vision 2040, aiming for sustainable economic growth and diversification.
