NYUAD Joins Forces With Dolphin Energy To Enhance Sustainability And Climate Change Research
A pioneering fellowship model has been launched, aimed at nurturing national talent by offering exceptional Emirati graduates a platform to enhance their skills in a sophisticated academic research setting. This initiative comes to fruition through a collaboration with Dolphin Energy, which will sponsor the NYU Abu Dhabi (NYUAD) Kawader Research Assistantship Programme. Maryam Al-Memari has been honored as the first Dolphin Energy Fellow, marking a significant milestone in this innovative partnership.
Al-Memari is currently contributing as a research assistant at NYUAD’s Centre for Interacting Urban Networks, under the guidance of Associate Professor of Biology, John Burt. Her research is diverse, focusing on developing eco-friendly antifouling coatings to mitigate marine pollution, analyzing the historical trends of desalination and their environmental repercussions in the Arabian region, and exploring the effects of coastal development in the Gulf Cooperation Council. Furthermore, she delves into the experiences of regional female reef scientists, aiming to address gender disparities within the field.

Mariët Westermann, NYUAD Vice Chancellor, expressed pride in announcing Al-Memari as the inaugural fellow. She highlighted Dolphin Energy's commitment to fostering research that propels sustainable growth both in Abu Dhabi and the broader region. Al-Memari's dedication to finding practical solutions to pressing challenges has been inspirational to her colleagues, positioning her as an exemplary figure in NYUAD’s sustainability and research endeavors.
Obaid Abdulla Al Dhaheri, CEO of Dolphin Energy, emphasized the fellowship's role in reinforcing their dedication to environmental stewardship and sustainable development. By recognizing and supporting exceptional talents like Al-Memari, Dolphin Energy aims to catalyze advancements in environmental conservation and sustainable practices across the UAE and beyond.
The fellowship is structured as a three-year, personalized programme tailored for Emirati early career researchers who are contemplating further studies or a career in research. This initiative aligns with the UAE’s Year of Sustainability, extending through 2024, underscoring a continued commitment by both NYUAD and Dolphin Energy towards advancing research in sustainability and climate change.
NYUAD’s strategies encompass various aspects of university life aimed at reducing greenhouse gas emissions and promoting innovative teaching and research on climate change. The institution is dedicated to fostering a culture of climate awareness and stewardship that supports sustainable growth across Abu Dhabi, the UAE, and the wider Middle East and North Africa region.
Since its inception, Dolphin Energy has played an active role as a responsible corporate entity by adhering to stringent government climate action plans. The company’s efforts include implementing programs focused on environmental protection, decarbonization, and energy efficiency. Moreover, Dolphin Energy is transforming its corporate social responsibility into formalized ESG strategies while continuing to sponsor vital environmental programs within its operational communities.
This partnership between NYUAD and Dolphin Energy not only signifies a step forward in empowering the next generation of Emirati researchers but also exemplifies a shared vision for a sustainable future. Through collaborative efforts and strategic initiatives, both institutions are setting a precedent for meaningful progress in environmental conservation and sustainable development within the region.
