MoHAP Launches Comprehensive Guideline For Weight Management And Obesity Prevention In The UAE

The Ministry of Health and Prevention (MoHAP) has introduced a new National Clinical Guideline for Weight Management and Prevention of Adulthood Obesity. This framework aims to enhance public health, reduce chronic diseases, and foster a healthier society. The guideline is pivotal in shaping a healthcare system that prioritises prevention and well-being, aligning with the Ministry's long-term objectives.

Dr. Hussain Abdul Rahman Al Rand, Assistant Undersecretary for the Public Health Sector, highlighted the strategic importance of this guideline. He stated it would not only improve public health but also enhance life quality across the UAE. Achieving these goals requires collaboration among individuals, policymakers, government bodies, and private sectors.

MoHAP Unveils New Weight Management Guidelines

The guideline is structured around four integrated pillars. The first pillar emphasises proper nutrition, offering a roadmap for healthy eating based on global research tailored to local dietary habits. The second pillar underscores the importance of physical activity, providing clear exercise recommendations to support fitness and weight maintenance.

Dr. Buthaina Bin Belaila, Head of the Non-Communicable Disease and Mental Health Department at MoHAP, stressed that obesity significantly contributes to non-communicable diseases like type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disorders. She noted that addressing obesity requires sustainable lifestyle changes in behaviour and diet.

The third pillar focuses on behavioural change strategies to help individuals overcome unhealthy habits and adopt sustainable lifestyles. It also considers psychological factors related to obesity. The fourth pillar outlines criteria for identifying cases needing medical or surgical intervention based on specific clinical standards.

Dr. Al Rand mentioned that tackling obesity demands an integrated approach combining public awareness, medical guidance, and targeted interventions. He added that MoHAP is committed to developing evidence-based strategies, launching national awareness campaigns, and conducting specialised training programmes for healthcare providers.

Collaborative Efforts for Sustainable Solutions

The guideline was developed by a multidisciplinary team of local experts in public health, nutrition, endocrinology, and surgery. It was reviewed by an international consultant to incorporate the latest global research and best practices. This comprehensive reference helps healthcare professionals manage weight safely and effectively.

Dr. Al Rand also noted that MoHAP will continue collaborating with partners across the health sector to achieve the "Year of Community" goals and improve individual and family well-being. "We will spare no effort to provide a supportive health environment inspires people to adopt sustainable lifestyle choices," he said.

Future Plans and Surveys

The upcoming National Health and Nutrition Survey will include adult obesity metrics. Results from this survey are expected to guide future health policies and programmes. Dr. Al Rand emphasised MoHAP's commitment to equipping professionals with globally recognised knowledge and tools for sustainable weight management.

The guideline not only offers clinical guidance but also promotes healthier daily habits like balanced meals and physical activity as impactful steps against obesity-related health issues. By fostering a broad-based community health culture, it aims to build a healthier future for the UAE.
