Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Lays Foundation Stone For Dubai Metro Blue Line Expansion Project
His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President, Prime Minister, and Ruler of Dubai, participated in the foundation stone ceremony for the Dubai Metro Blue Line. This line is a significant addition to the city's public transport network. Spanning 30 km with 14 stations, it aims to enhance mobility across nine districts, expected to house over one million residents by 2040.
The Blue Line will connect the Green Line at Creek Station and the Red Line at Centrepoint Station. It serves residential and academic areas and key development projects. The line is projected to support a population of one million by 2040. It also links to Dubai Silicon Oasis, a hub for innovation and technology-driven economic growth.
The completion of the Blue Line will extend Dubai's rail network from 101 km to 131 km. This includes 120 km for the metro and 11 km for the tram. The number of stations will increase from 64 to 78, with 67 metro stations and 11 tram stations. The fleet will expand from 140 to 168 trains.
The Blue Line project aligns with the Dubai Economic Agenda D33, offering economic, social, and environmental benefits. By 2040, it is expected to yield a benefit-cost ratio of AED2.60 for every AED1 spent. Total anticipated benefits are projected to exceed AED56.5 billion by then.
His Highness approved the architectural design of Emaar Properties Station, which will be the highest metro station globally at 74 metres tall. Designed by Skidmore, Owings & Merrill (SOM), this station embodies 'Dubai: A Gateway to the Future'. Covering about 11,000 square metres, it can accommodate up to 160,000 passengers daily.
The station's design integrates seamlessly into its urban surroundings while offering commercial opportunities. Its construction materials reflect a blend of heritage and modernity using stone, glass, and bronze. Sustainability was central in selecting these materials to ensure environmental efficiency.
Impact on Public Transport
The Blue Line represents Dubai's fifth strategic public transport project alongside existing metro lines and trams. It features an integrated transport system with bus bays, taxi stands, bike racks, and parking spaces for People of Determination. Its maximum capacity exceeds 850,000 passengers per day.
The line includes three interchange stations: Creek Station on the Green Line at Al Jaddaf; Centrepoint Station on the Red Line at Al Rashidiya; International City 1 Station on the Blue Line; plus an iconic station in Dubai Creek Harbour.
