Minister Of Industry Engages With Albemarle On Lithium Technology And EV Battery Production

Minister of Industry and Mineral Resources, Bandar bin Ibrahim Alkhorayef, recently visited Albemarle Corporation's lithium mine in Kings Mountain, North Carolina. This visit involved discussions with Albemarle's Chairman and CEO, Kent Masters, focusing on technology transfer, joint investments, and expertise exchange in lithium extraction and processing.

The Kings Mountain facility is crucial to North America's critical minerals strategy. It aims to produce enough lithium by 2030 to power over 1.2 million electric vehicles annually. The discussions highlighted the importance of bilateral cooperation in extracting lithium from unconventional sources to meet the rising global demand for EV components.

Minister Explores Lithium Partnership with Albemarle

During the visit, Alkhorayef and his delegation received briefings on Albemarle's advanced technologies for hard-rock lithium extraction and lithium hydroxide conversion processes. They also learned about innovative supply-chain solutions for the electric vehicle battery industry. These insights are vital for Saudi Arabia's strategic interests in securing a position within the global battery value chain.

The minister was joined by Eng. Saleh Al-Solami, CEO of the National Industrial Development Center, along with senior representatives from Saudi Arabia's industry and mineral resources ecosystem. They explored how Albemarle's technologies could be applied within Saudi Arabia's mineral development strategy, supporting the Kingdom's automotive transformation goals under Vision 2030.

The engagement aligns with the ministry's plan to establish strategic partnerships with global industry leaders. This initiative aims to facilitate advanced technology transfer and attract specialized investments into Saudi Arabia's mining sector. It also supports the Kingdom's efforts to develop its critical mineral resources and integrate into global value chains for future industries.

Both parties discussed frameworks for technology transfer, joint venture development, and knowledge-sharing programs that align with Saudi Arabia’s strategic interests. These initiatives are designed to enhance cooperation in lithium extraction from unconventional resources.

This visit underscores Saudi Arabia’s commitment to industrial diversification under Vision 2030. By leveraging global expertise and forming strategic alliances, the Kingdom aims to bolster its position in emerging industries like electric vehicles.
