MBZUAI Launches Innovative AI Language And Multimodal Models For Diverse Applications
The Mohamed bin Zayed University of Artificial Intelligence (MBZUAI) has taken a significant leap forward in the field of generative artificial intelligence (AI) by introducing specialized language and multimodal models through its Institute of Foundation Models (IFM). This initiative marks a pivotal moment in the advancement of AI technologies, with the IFM being established last year to unite leading AI experts in developing scalable, broadly useful, and efficient AI models. These models are designed for a variety of sustainable applications, showcasing MBZUAI's global leadership following its successful launch of Jais and Vicuna, two highly advanced AI models.
MBZUAI recently unveiled five innovative models: BiMediX, PALO, GLaMM, GeoChat, and MobiLLaMA. These models represent a mix of small and large language models alongside large multimodal models (LMMs), which are adept at processing and analyzing data from multiple sources, including text, audio, and images. A notable feature of these models is their emphasis on Arabic language capabilities, reflecting MBZUAI's commitment to enhancing technology in the region.

The development of these models stems from extensive research conducted by MBZUAI's faculty, researchers, and students. Each model is designed to impact various sectors significantly. BiMediX focuses on healthcare; PALO enhances detailed visual reasoning; GLaMM offers multilingual multimodal capabilities; GeoChat specializes in multimodal reasoning for the geo-spatial domain; and MobiLLaMA improves efficiency for large language models on mobile devices.
Professor Timothy Baldwin, MBZUAI's Acting Provost and Professor of Natural Language Processing, highlighted the transformative potential of these models. "These models showcase the ability of the Institute of Foundational Models to transform advanced research into applications that address novel use cases across society," he stated. Professor Baldwin emphasized the versatility of multimodal models in addressing specific industry needs, aligning with MBZUAI's vision to drive excellence in knowledge creation, transfer, and AI deployment. This initiative not only fosters economic growth but also positions Abu Dhabi as a central hub for the international AI community.
By transcending traditional single-modality models, MBZUAI's latest offerings promise to open new avenues across various industries. The deployment of these specialized language and multimodal models signifies a major milestone for the IFM and the broader research community. It underscores MBZUAI's ongoing commitment to pioneering advancements in AI that cater to diverse applications while promoting sustainable development.
