MBZUAI Showcases AI Breakthroughs In Celebration Of UAE Innovation Month

Mohamed bin Zayed University of Artificial Intelligence (MBZUAI) is at the forefront of artificial intelligence (AI) research and development, striving to position Abu Dhabi as a leading global center for AI innovations. This initiative is in line with the UAE's Innovation Month, focusing on "Influential Innovations." A key highlight from MBZUAI's achievements is the development of Jais, the most advanced Arabic large language model (LLM) to date, serving over 400 million Arabic speakers worldwide. The university's commitment extends to promoting green LLMs, supporting underrepresented languages, and ensuring transparency in LLM training and development through its Institution of Foundational Models (IMF) and the LLM360 framework.

Addressing the environmental impact of AI, MBZUAI has introduced the AI Operating System (AIOS), designed to minimize energy, time, and talent costs in AI computing. Concurrently, the university is actively involved in sustainability research projects aimed at tackling climate change challenges. Another notable innovation from MBZUAI is securing a US patent for an AI-based computer vision solution capable of replicating individual handwriting styles. This technology holds promise for assisting individuals who have lost their writing ability and improving machines' transcription capabilities.

MBZUAI's AI Innovations Highlight UAE Month

MBZUAI's faculty and researchers are employing a multidisciplinary AI approach to advance remote patient monitoring and triaging systems. These efforts are geared towards offering smart care solutions for the aging population, including algorithms for human activity recognition and hardware prototypes for health and safety monitoring. The objective is to commercialize these systems for healthcare settings and smart homes catering to elderly residents.

Furthermore, MBZUAI has made strides in creating high-fidelity photorealistic 3D avatars for virtual telepresence through VOODOO 3D technology. This project is a collaborative effort with ETH Zurich, Vin AI, and Pinscreen, aiming to replace traditional video conferencing with realistic animated avatars suitable for virtual reality (VR) experiences. The university encourages the academic community to adopt this innovative technology.

In summary, MBZUAI's contributions to AI research and development span various domains, including language models, sustainability efforts, handwriting replication technology, patient monitoring systems, and telepresence technology. These advancements underscore the university's role in advancing the field of AI and cultivating an ecosystem of AI practitioners.
