Masouliya Centre At ADJD Launches Campaign To Combat Electronic Extortion Risks In Abu Dhabi
The Abu Dhabi Centre for Community and Legal Awareness, known as "Masouliya," under the Abu Dhabi Judicial Department (ADJD), has initiated a campaign to combat cyber extortion. This initiative seeks to educate the public on the dangers of this crime, especially with the prevalent use of social media. The campaign's goal is to promote safety and preventive measures among various societal groups.
Aligned with directives from His Highness Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Vice President, Deputy Prime Minister, Chairman of the Presidential Court, and Chairman of ADJD, the campaign aims to enhance legal awareness in the community. By doing so, it seeks to maintain security and stability. It focuses on educating individuals about necessary precautions when using the internet to ensure safe interaction with technology.

The campaign also highlights the dangers posed by cybercrime and its legal repercussions. It addresses how misuse of social networking sites can lead individuals to become victims of electronic extortion. A significant aspect of this initiative is informing parents about monitoring their children to protect them from becoming victims or suspects in extortion crimes.
To achieve its awareness goals, the campaign includes organising events targeting different societal segments. Additionally, educational materials are distributed through print, audio-visual, and social media platforms. These efforts aim to reach a broad audience and effectively communicate the importance of cyber safety.
Article 42 of Federal Decree-Law No. 34 of 2021 addresses combating rumours and cybercrimes. It states that anyone who uses an information network or technology means to extort or threaten another person faces imprisonment up to two years and fines between AED250,000 and AED500,000. If threats involve committing a crime or attributing dishonourable acts with a request for action or inaction, imprisonment can extend up to ten years.
The campaign underscores legal responsibilities associated with such actions under current legislation in the country. By raising awareness about these legal aspects, it aims to deter potential offenders and protect vulnerable individuals from falling prey to cyber extortion.
This comprehensive approach ensures that all members of society are informed about cyber threats and equipped with knowledge on how to protect themselves online. Through education and awareness-raising activities, "Masouliya" strives to foster a safer digital environment for everyone in Abu Dhabi.
