Masdar And TotalEnergies Partner To Pioneer Green Hydrogen-to-SAF Conversion Project
Masdar, Abu Dhabi Future Energy Company PJSC, has entered into an agreement with TotalEnergies to explore the feasibility of a commercial project converting green hydrogen to methanol and then to Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF). This initiative aims to decarbonize sectors like aviation and maritime, which are challenging to abate.
The project's primary goal is to reduce emissions in industries such as aviation and maritime. It will capture CO2 from industrial sources and use it as feedstock, alongside green hydrogen produced through renewable energy-powered electrolysis, for creating green methanol and SAF.

This agreement follows a successful test flight by Masdar and TotalEnergies during COP28 in December 2023. The flight demonstrated the potential of converting methanol into SAF, showcasing the viability of this innovative approach.
Over the past three years, Masdar has formed several strategic partnerships to support the development of the SAF sector. The UAE's General Policy for Sustainable Aviation Fuel aims to supply 1% of fuel for national airlines at UAE airports using locally produced SAF by 2031. This policy also seeks to create a regulatory framework for SAF, exploring policies that support its long-term economic operation within the UAE.
The agreement aligns with Abu Dhabi's Low Carbon Hydrogen Policy, which promotes low-carbon hydrogen as a future energy source. This policy is a significant step towards economic growth, sustainability, and energy security, contributing to a sustainable future.
The Low Carbon Hydrogen Policy complements the UAE National Hydrogen Strategy. This strategy aims to position the UAE as a leading global producer of low-carbon hydrogen by 2031. Since its inception in 2006, Masdar has been pivotal in advancing the UAE's vision of sustainability and climate action.
Masdar has engaged in projects across more than 40 countries. The company aims to increase its renewable energy portfolio capacity to 100GW by 2030 and become a leading producer of green hydrogen by that year.
Aviation remains a key focus for Masdar's Green Hydrogen business. The company continues to build strategic partnerships designed to foster the growth of the SAF sector. This project represents a strategic milestone towards ensuring economic growth while promoting sustainability and energy security. It underscores Masdar's commitment to pioneering clean energy solutions globally.
