Masdar, TAQA, And Eni Forge Agreement To Enhance Renewable Energy Collaboration In Mediterranean Region
Abu Dhabi Future Energy Company PJSC – Masdar, in the presence of President His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan and Italy's Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, has entered into an agreement with TAQA Transmission and Eni S.p.A. This marks a significant advancement in the strategic partnership between the UAE, Italy, and Albania. The agreement aims to establish a framework for a long-term power off-take agreement in Italy for renewable energy produced in Albania.
The tripartite strategic partnership framework was signed during Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week 2025. It focuses on multilateral cooperation among the UAE, Italy, and Albania in renewable energy and infrastructure. The initiative aims to boost energy security, promote sustainable development, and accelerate energy transformation in the Mediterranean region.

Masdar and TAQA Transmission have been designated as the UAE's representatives in this initiative. From Albania, Korporata Elektroenergjitike Shqiptare (KESH) and OPERATORI I SISTEMIT TE TRANSMETIMIT SHQIPTARE (OST) are involved. Eni is identified as the preferred potential off-taker for this collaboration. This partnership seeks to enhance cross-border renewable energy efforts.
Dr. Sultan bin Ahmed Al Jaber, Minister of Industry and Advanced Technology and Chairman of Masdar, stated that the agreement supports a shared vision to strengthen renewable energy collaboration across borders. He highlighted that combining UAE's clean energy expertise with Italy's advanced infrastructure can unlock new progress pathways.
Jasim Husain Thabet, Group CEO of TAQA, emphasised that this agreement showcases strategic collaboration's power in advancing sustainable solutions. He noted that strong energy infrastructure is crucial for a successful clean transition. By leveraging transmission network expertise, TAQA ensures efficient integration of renewable power across borders.
Mohamed Jameel Al Ramahi, CEO of Masdar, expressed that this agreement builds on existing collaborations across the Mediterranean. By integrating TAQA’s high-voltage transmission expertise with Eni’s European market leadership, Masdar is positioned to deploy solutions at gigawatt scale.
Energy Security and Market Leadership
Claudio Descalzi, CEO of Eni, commented on the importance of cross-border collaboration for energy security. He stated that such agreements leverage industrial excellence and market leadership to promote cleaner energy vectors. The strong relationship with partners in UAE and Albania helps unlock new pathways towards energy transition.
Masdar has significantly expanded its renewable portfolio over two years, increasing capacity by 150% to 51GW by 2024 from 20GW in 2022. This includes acquiring a majority stake in TERNA ENERGY last year, Greece's largest renewable developer and investor. Masdar aims for a portfolio capacity of 100GW by 2030.
This strategic partnership framework not only enhances regional cooperation but also contributes to global efforts towards sustainable development through increased renewable energy capacity.
