Masdar Announces Preferred Contractors And Suppliers For World’s First 24/7 Solar Battery Storage Project

Abu Dhabi Future Energy Company PJSC, known as Masdar, has unveiled its preferred suppliers and contractors for a groundbreaking project. This initiative will combine solar photovoltaic (PV) power with battery storage to provide continuous renewable energy. The announcement was made during Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week (ADSW), highlighting the project's significance in advancing clean energy solutions.

The project aims to deliver up to 1 gigawatt (GW) of continuous power every day. It will feature a 5.2GW solar PV plant paired with a 19 gigawatt-hour (GWh) battery energy storage system (BESS). This makes it the largest combined solar and BESS project globally, showcasing the UAE's commitment to sustainable energy.

Masdar has chosen JA Solar and Jinko Solar as preferred suppliers for PV modules, each providing 2.6GW capacity using advanced TopCon technology. CATL, the world's largest battery manufacturer, will supply its TENER technology for the BESS, ensuring high efficiency and safety throughout the project's lifespan.

Larsen & Toubro and POWERCHINA have been selected as preferred Engineering, Procurement, and Construction (EPC) contractors. Letters of Award were signed at ADSW, marking a significant milestone in the project's development. Abdulaziz Alobaidli from Masdar signed these agreements alongside representatives from both companies.

This ambitious project aligns with the UAE Energy Strategy 2050 by enhancing renewable energy integration into the grid. The facility will play a crucial role in transforming energy systems, ensuring stability and efficiency by addressing renewable energy intermittency challenges.

Masdar's Chief Operating Officer, Abdulaziz Alobaidli, expressed enthusiasm about collaborating with top-tier partners to set new standards in clean energy innovation. "The record-breaking project we are developing with EWEC is a giant step forward in the clean energy transformation," he stated.

Technological Advancements

The PV modules from JA Solar and Jinko Solar incorporate optimized parameters for maximum efficiency over 30 years. CATL's TENER technology offers comprehensive safety features and long service life for the BESS, ensuring reliable operation throughout the project's duration.

The seamless integration of solar power into the grid through this facility supports the UAE's leadership in sustainable energy initiatives. It also contributes to achieving goals set during COP28, reinforcing the nation's commitment to environmental sustainability.
