Maktoum Bin Mohammed Engages With SWIFT CEO To Enhance Financial Collaboration

H.H. Sheikh Maktoum bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, First Deputy Ruler of Dubai, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Finance, recently engaged in discussions with Javier Pérez-Tasso, CEO of SWIFT. The meeting focused on enhancing collaboration between the UAE and SWIFT by leveraging the UAE's strengths in infrastructure, regulation, and digital transformation.

SWIFT is a global cooperative that connects over 11,500 banking and securities organisations across more than 200 countries. It provides secure financial messaging services that facilitate international financial flows. Headquartered in Belgium, SWIFT plays a crucial role in improving compliance frameworks and advancing cybersecurity within the financial industry.

Sheikh Maktoum highlighted Dubai's emergence as a significant global financial hub. He emphasised its strategic position as a gateway between international markets. Dubai aims to collaborate closely with international entities like SWIFT to support global financial flows and enhance trade integrity.

The UAE is committed to developing a future-ready financial ecosystem that boosts global financial resilience and encourages innovative technologies. Sheikh Maktoum noted that the UAE's business-friendly environment and advanced infrastructure enable global institutions to expand their regional presence effectively.

SWIFT facilitates the daily transmission of over 53 million FIN messages globally. These messages form the backbone of secure communication between banks and financial institutions worldwide. The organisation also has an office located in the Dubai International Financial Centre (DIFC), further strengthening its presence in the region.

The meeting was attended by several key figures, including Mohammed bin Hadi Al Hussaini, Minister of State for Financial Affairs; Helal Almarri, Director-General of the Dubai Department of Economy and Tourism; Essa Kazim, Governor of DIFC; Hesham Abdulla Al Qassim, Vice Chairman and Managing Director of Emirates NBD; and Marwan Ahmad Lutfi, Director-General of Al Etihad Credit Bureau.

Future Prospects for Collaboration

Strengthening partnerships aligns with the goals outlined in the Dubai Economic Agenda D33. This agenda aims to position Dubai among the top four global financial centres. Hosting SIBOS 2029 in Dubai reflects its growing influence in the financial sector and its capability to host major international events.

Sheikh Maktoum expressed enthusiasm for hosting SIBOS 2029 in Dubai. He stated that this choice underscores Dubai's expanding role on the global stage and its exceptional ecosystem for hosting significant industry gatherings.

"Dubai is keen to work more closely with international players such as SWIFT to facilitate global financial flows," said Sheikh Maktoum. "This collaboration will support trade, enhance system integrity, and advance industry standards."
