India's L&T Secures $1.8 Billion In New Orders For Power Grid Projects In GCC
Larsen & Toubro (L&T), a leading Indian multinational conglomerate with expertise in engineering, construction, and technology, has recently achieved significant success, securing new orders worth between $1.2 billion to $1.8 billion.
These orders, obtained by its Power Transmission & Distribution (PT&D) arm, are aimed at expanding and reinforcing high voltage electricity grids in the Middle East, specifically in Saudi Arabia and the UAE.

In Saudi Arabia, L&T's PT&D division has garnered projects to establish ±500kV High Voltage Direct Current (HVDC) transmission links. These projects are part of a more extensive initiative to interconnect various regions of the Saudi national electricity network.
By implementing HVDC links, the initiative seeks to facilitate power exchange across regions and enhance the overall resilience of the system. Additionally, L&T has been entrusted with three more packages within the kingdom, including the construction of two 380kV overhead transmission lines and a 380kV Gas Insulated Substation. These infrastructure developments are crucial for integrating renewable energy sources and fortifying the grid.
The company's efforts extend to the UAE, where it has secured an order to erect two significant 400kV Gas Insulated Substations in Abu Dhabi. The scope of these projects is comprehensive, encompassing civil works, Series Current Limiting Reactors, Auto Transformers, and a suite of control, protection, and monitoring systems.
This includes substation monitoring and alarm setups, fault and power quality monitoring systems, telecommunication infrastructures, and integration with the Load Dispatch Centre. These enhancements are poised to significantly improve the power transfer capabilities of the region's electricity grid.
T. Madhava Das, Whole-Time Director & Senior Executive Vice President (Utilities) at L&T, highlighted the critical nature of these projects, stating, "The fortification and modernization of transmission systems is the foremost step in establishing a secure, resilient grid capable of handling variable renewable generation in an evolving energy market. We thank our customers for entrusting these projects with us." His statement underscores the importance of modern and robust transmission systems in supporting the dynamic needs of today's energy market.
L&T's global operations span EPC projects, high-tech manufacturing, and a range of services. With a valuation of $27 billion, the conglomerate operates across numerous geographies, showcasing its capability to execute large-scale and technologically complex projects. The recent orders in the Middle East serve as a testament to L&T's commitment to enhancing energy infrastructure and its ability to deliver significant projects in key markets.
