H.H. Sheikha Latifa Bint Mohammed Explores Innovation At Downtown Design 2023
H.H. Sheikha Latifa bint Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Chairperson of the Dubai Culture and Arts Authority, recently attended the 11th Downtown Design event. This flagship exhibition is part of Dubai Design Week and is recognised as a premier showcase for contemporary design in the Middle East. The event, held from 6–9 November, is organised in partnership with Dubai Design District (d3) and Dubai Culture.
Sheikha Latifa highlighted that Downtown Design embodies Dubai's dynamic creative spirit and identity. She noted its success in offering artists a platform for collaboration and innovation across various design fields. "Downtown Design has built a solid foundation for the arts and design sector by creating expansive spaces for creators to exchange insights and bring their ideas to life as remarkable works of creativity," she said.
Sheikha Latifa emphasised the exhibition's role in empowering designers with resources to reach a global audience. It inspires entrepreneurship by providing access to investment opportunities, thus bolstering Dubai’s status as a creative economy hub. The event supports cultural industries, encouraging designers to contribute significantly to this vibrant ecosystem.
During her visit, Sheikha Latifa explored diverse artworks reflecting Dubai’s cultural richness. She expressed admiration for the exhibition's growth over the years. She engaged with artists from the ‘Designers from the Emirates’ showcase, curated by Emirati designer Omar Al Gurg, which featured furniture and products from over 30 emerging UAE designers.
The exhibition also included interactions with exhibitors presenting innovative handicrafts and unique creative concepts. Sheikha Latifa was particularly interested in displays celebrating cultural fusion and heritage crafts. Among these were initiatives like ‘Designed in Saudi Arabia’ by the Saudi Ministry of Culture’s Design Committee and ‘Interior Designs from Spain’ by B8 architecture studio.
Sheikha Latifa reviewed creations from the Tanween programme for 2024, showcasing emerging UAE designers' talents. Additionally, she visited the inaugural Editions fair, dedicated to limited edition art and design in the Middle East. This platform blends craftsmanship with artistic innovation through works by both new and established artists.
Interactive Experiences and Workshops
The Downtown Design event offers an engaging programme featuring creative installations, interactive experiences, and sector-specific events. It includes dialogue sessions and workshops led by design experts, reinforcing its position as a leading platform for creativity in the region.
During her tour, Sheikha Latifa met Emirati designer Aljoud Lootah who unveiled a collection marking her studio's 10th anniversary. She also encountered Iwan Maktabi presenting limited-edition carpets designed by artist Mohammed Ahmed Ibrahim. These interactions highlighted innovative approaches within contemporary design.
The exhibition continues to be an essential venue for fostering dialogue among artists while showcasing diverse creative expressions. It remains integral to Dubai's vision of being a global centre for culture and innovation.
