Khorfakkan Reef Project: Enhancing Marine Life And Fisheries In Sharjah

The "Khorfakkan Reef" project, initiated under the guidance of His Highness Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, aims to protect and enhance the marine environment for future generations. This initiative highlights the collaboration between public and private sectors to achieve the strategic goals of the UAE, particularly in Sharjah.

On Friday, a detailed environmental survey was conducted by the Sharjah Fish Resources Authority in partnership with a specialised company. The survey took place at a significant site in Khorfakkan as part of the "Khorfakkan Reef" pilot project. This step is crucial for assessing how artificial caves can provide safe habitats for marine life and their impact on the local ecosystem.

Khorfakkan Reef Project Enhances Marine Life

The project aims to develop innovative solutions that sustainably enhance fisheries. Ali Ahmed Abu Ghazin, Chairman of the Sharjah Fish Resources Authority, emphasised that this initiative will create diverse environments to attract fish and boost marine biodiversity.

In 2024, a partnership was formed with HaejooX, an international contracting company, to study the project's feasibility over a year. The study involved reviewing global best practices and analysing marine reefs' effectiveness in Sharjah.

Advanced technologies were employed in this study, including a 3D scanning system. This technology helped understand fish quantities and types present in the area. Preliminary data from this system offers insights into potential marine life expansion once the project is completed.

The "Khorfakkan Reef" project reflects a true partnership between sectors to achieve ambitious visions for marine conservation. It underscores efforts to preserve and develop marine environments through innovative approaches and strategic collaborations.
